GSI Outdoors - Pinnacle Camper Cookset

Category: Camp Kitchen

This is a great cook set for car camping. The pots and pan are big enough for cooking for several people, cook evenly and are durable. I also really like that all the pots, pan, cups, plates and bowls fit together. The wash basin is really convenient too. Its a bit heavy and large for back packing in my opinion.

We were looking for cooking equipment that we could use for backpacking and car camping. Our number one priority was that we could take a lot of stuff in a small package and boy did this deliver. We tried it out already on a camping trip and were the envy of our friends because even though we have a 5 yr old and carry her stuff too, we were still packing very light. Very happy with it.

The whole kit is a bit large for an individual backpacker. However, if I was going it alone, I'd only bring some of the gear and use the rest of the space as storage. The kit nestles together very well fitting three cooking pans, 8 cups (4 insulated) a pot handle and strainer lids. Other comparable cookware sets don't include a frypan. When cooking for a large group, there are several options. You wind up with plenty of space to cook for 4 or more. The pans seem to be high quality but be careful of the finish because the hard anodized coating is thin. Easy to clean!

We have had this cookset for about 2 years now and have taken this on every camping trip. The cookset is very versatile. We use the cups for oatmeal in the morning as well as drinks. The set packs tightly together in a little container that we often use to wash dishes at our campsite. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because of the construction of the cups. They have three layers, an inner plastic cup, a middle foam insulation and an outer hard plastic cup. You can pull the inner cup along with the insulation out for washing etc. That inner foam insulation takes forever to dry.

Its lightweight, its colorful, it packs up super efficiently, and it heats up like no other set I've ever used. I've had these for a few years now and they still look like they're brand new other than a little carbonization on the bottom of the skillets. They have al the essential kit you would need for pretty much any situation. The only issues I have experienced are that if left on the pots/skillets while cooking, the removable handle does get pretty warm. I just take it off until I need to move my cookware. Also the strainer takes a little fidgeting to get it to work properly, but it does work, and what do you really expect from such a compact piece of gear? It's meant for backpacking, which it works great for, but I also use it for car camping because it does work so well.

I just returned from a week in the Boundary Waters with this set, and it worked extremely well. I've been going there for a couple decades now, and it is so nice to have a (nearly) complete tableware set all pack down inside the kitchen sink. We didn't use the bowls more than a couple times, as it was really nice to eat hot food out of the mug with the insulating layer. As a plus, that frees up the bigger bowl to be used for your whiskey/water that pairs so well with freeze-dried beefaroni. I'm still a sucker for my Jetboil if there's only a couple in the group, but for a group of 4 this set is perfect. It would be perfect to have the collapsible utensils nest inside the mugs so all is contained, but we have a utensil roll that holds our Ti sporks (get some of those, weigh nothing and it's all you need) as well as other bigger tools. This set isn't for the ultralight or minimalist camper/hiker by any means, but if you can spare the room or weight you won't ever regret having the Pinnacle set with you.

Ideal for a family of four that can tolerate the heft for a day hike to eat on the beach or at a campground (it is too heavy for anything else). A three liter pot is big enough for pasta for four. The straining lids do their job, but are not for single-handed use. The frying pan has issues: it isn't flat, so oil flows to the sides, and it definitely has hot spots (I can tell from the unevenness of the grilled cheese I made). I'm not a fan of the neoprene sleeves, but I am sure they would help with hot drinks. Oddly, the sleeves crease easily and take a while to dry. The plates are thin plastic. While they are more than stiff enough to eat off of, I doubt they would hold up as a cutting board. Like every other reviewer, I wish there were additional handles. Other places carry them...REI should start stocking them. I really recommend using the set, like all gear, before you head out. You will understand the difference between how much heat to use when transitioning from home cookware to this excellent, portable set.

I have used this cookset for 5 years for 2-10 day canoe trips. With groups of 3-5 people.Using a Dragonfly stove or a vintage coleman double burner suitcase stove. Has held up better than expected even on small wood fires. No warping or chipping of the finish. The fry pan is Adequate but I prefer to bring a GSI 10 in. pan that has also been tough as nails with no warping. Just bought this for my 25 year old Daughter, she was excited to tell me her trip plans....priceless..

I mainly bought this for scouting. It works great for car camping as well as backpacking. I just leave the bigger pots at home with back packing. Compact, stores easy and cleans up great.

I bought this for our backpacking trip this past weekend and it was amazing.

Got this set new this year, tested it out on our first 6 day trip to the Black Hills...Good Stuff: sink is cool feature, plates, pots, cups nest well, easy to clean Not so Good Stuff: frying pan warped and deformed on 2nd night. Now there's a crown in the center of the frying pan...makes it hard to cook almost anything. Bummer, because this was expensive, and our previous set (MSR Blacklite) had lasted 20+ years.

I have used this for three years and am very happy with the purchase. I love how everything nests inside itself. The pots are nice size...the pan is a bit small but still big enough to make pancakes. I love the mugs which have enough insulation to use for morning coffee. The handle can get really hot so I don't attach it until I am ready to pull something off of the stove. Very happy with this purchase.

I did a special event for my wife where I mixed things up. As a result, I heated oil around 375 degrees (used a thermometer) for over 30 minutes in the small pot. We cooked small pieces of steak in oil about an inch high over a Jetboil backpacking stove. Unhealthy? Sure. Fun? Yes. Did the GSI equipment hold up? Sure did. No warping, easy to clean, and the ridges on the bottom of the pot allows it to grip very well to the stove... Plus, the backpacking stove goes inside a pouch that fits inside the cups, so I can store it with the GSI gear.

The Pinnacle Camper Cookset could not be better for a family of four--it is easy to unstack, use, clean, and restack, and the cookware itself is high-quality and solid. We used it for drive-up, but it is light enough to accommodate backcountry family adventures. Also, I had a (self-inflicted) problem with one item of the set, which GSI helped me with immediately, though they were under no obligation to do so whatsoever, so I would also like to single them out for just outstanding customer service. Well done!

I really enjoyed using this cookset. It has a lot of stuff in a neat, compact, easy to carry setup. Getting everything to fit correctly back into place is somewhat of a puzzle, but not too challenging. Car camping is probably your best use. A group of backpackers, however, might want to share the load and be able to use it just fine. The only thing that takes getting used to, is the shape of the cups. Not having a round cup/mug in my hand was awkward at first.

This has been a great cookset- have been using it for years... and it works like a champ.. .love the versatility of having two pots and a skillet built in for cooking pastas, brewing teas, and other meals- mostly while car camping- I have a smaller set (GSI) for backpacking...

True we use this for car camping but even car campers know that gear quickly piles up. This set is PERFECT for our family of 4. The teflon coated pans are amazing and make clean up so much easier and everything nests very nicely. The insulated cups are perfect and handle boiling water with comfort and ease. My only suggestion is to make one of the strainers tops with larger holes as they can get easily clogged up.

Day three of trying to get the sticker glue residue out of the inside of both pot lids.

I borrowed this set for a two week trip to the PNW and bought one upon returning home. Smart design packs what you need for a group of four. Cookware is decently sized and useful. Folks cooking up a huge breakfast will want to supplement the small fry pan with a big cast iron. I worry about the Teflon but the surfaces were easy to clean. Very convenient to pack up -- great for the kind of place to place car camping my crew usually tackles.

There are just way too many unnecessary items in this set. It might be only good for large families. The plastic cups smells after use, and it is time-consuming for packing and unpacking and keep tracking all the items. The lid for the pots are not secure enough, just affixed by some tiny screw nails, they fell apart after a few usage.

I'm very pleased with what I received. I've had 2, 2 person GSI back packing cook sets. The only reason I had 2 is because my partner stepped on the first with a crampon.... stoked to use and have a fry pan, 2 and 3 l pots! I heard this is the way to go because the plastics are higher quality. It's heavy, but I'd remove materials and store food inside for backpacking. The small 2 person set up made it hard to be culinarily creative.

Picked this set up in preparation for a summer of frequent car camping. Our kids are now 1 and 3, and our old camping/backpacking routines and gear need adjustment to accomodate the youngsters.

Recently used for a weekend car camping trip for 4 people. Handles hot food well, easy to clean with not a lot of water using the built in 'sink. Took my a second to realize what I thought were cups, were what they called bowls, guess they serve two purposes. The mugs with lids are a great addition! Love the way everything packs together, and it's not hard to repack everything yourself.

I was given this product as a gift. There are many things to like, but the the issue we have was that we ended up melting the plastic lids. I am going to check with REI to see if they have an idea for us to use as a replacement.

Bought this intentionally for car camping due to the size and weight. The quality and construction is excellent, heat dispersion is great when used on my Coleman dual burner stove. All components work great!

We've had this cook set now for a couple of years and it is amazing! We trimmed down our former cook set (old t-fal set) to this and the GSI Pinnacle Dualist (we are a family of 6). We found additional pot grippers and the cook sets nests 6 light my fire sporks, a backpack stove, and spice set. Perfect for a small or large family!

We just camped for 2 weeks with this set and are very happy with it. It was great having different a color for each person, and the pots and pans were perfect for simple camping fare: pasta, soup, hot water for coffee/cocoa, pancakes, bacon, eggs. The frying pan is a bit small for bacon, and it is also not flat: the grease all accumulates on one side, but it is certainly functional. We liked having two pots: we rarely cooked with both, but it was nice to have an extra for hot water. The handle does get hot, but it is removable, so it doesn't have to be on while you cook. The dishwashing bag is convenient if you don't have anything better; the sides are not rigid, though, and spills happen easily if it is more than half full. We love that everything packs up so compactly; the only drawback to that is that you have to dry everything after washing it, because it will never dry on its own once packed away. Not a big deal and definitely a worthwhile tradeoff.

This cookset is awesome! It stores so well yet contains so much! Bowls, mugs, plates, lids, and cookware, it's everything you need to cook at camp. Paired with a large 2 burner propane stove this set is awesome! At $140 it's expensive but you get what you pay for, this set is awesome. Buy it and don't look back.

I bought this almost 2 years ago, and been using them every day. We are driving the Americas, they packed small, and the only problem we had is the frying pan warped and peeled a little bit, but other than that is really durable, we use it several times a day continuously for the past 2 years.

Great for backpacking or car camping. We used it on a primus backpacking stove and over the fire. Worked great either way. My friends who we do all our outdoor adventures with also purchased this set was extremely pleased as well. Highly recommend!

This is a great set! The pots & pan worked great, no sticking, even cooking throughout. I was a little worried about the "sink" to wash the dishes in but it worked perfectly. This set doesn't take up much space which was awesome.

So far I've only used it once but it went well. Was easy to use, effective, easy t clean, and easy to repack. The lids on the bowls weren't the best but my biggest complaint is that I wish it came with two pot handles.

Have had this for a few years now, love the quality and versatility. We take it in a backpack and I personally don't find it too big. Great for car camping as well

Great product for a family lacking room when traviling. We will be using it in 2 months with my family of 3. My 2 year old think's its the coolest thing.

We’ve got a tiny teardrop camper with a 2-burner propane stove. This cook kit is perfect! Packs up tiny and works perfectly. Highly recommend.

We ware having a great pic-nik with friend on the lake cooking in this set. It was really comfortable.

I love this set, have used for a couple years without any regrets.

Bought this set because I have the Kettlist set and needed something bigger for possible group cooking. Took on a Scouting trip down the river and didn’t end up using the full set. We did use the fry pan to great success. Made hash browns, eggs and bacon in it, and let the other Scouts use it for their cooking as well. Was used by a much more advanced camper than me who was holding his pan handle with a cloth and he confessed his jealousy at the cool handle on my pan. That was nice to know.

How to clean it?  It still has soot and strong smell.

GSI Outdoors recommends cleaning all of their products by hand with soapy, warm water.

Can the plates also fit in the 2L pot if I want to "pack down" to a 2 person size?

No, the plates are a little too large to fit into the 2 liter pot.

Can you leave the lids on while cooking/frying? For example, while I am frying hashbrowns, can I leave the lid on so that heat is trapped?

The lid is designed to be used while cooking and can also be utilized as a strainer.

Hello,I bought this cookset and I'm glad. Unfortunately, this summer ,I lost the lid of the small 2l pot. Can I order one?Thank you for your reply.

We do not carry separate pieces for this cookset. We recommend contacting GSI directly to inquire about purchasing separate pieces.

Is there a sink available that would sit between the 2L&3L pot? Have noticed that when nested that the handle attachment point on the 2L scrapes against the coating of the larger pot. Another sink would be helpful for washing.

We suggest contacting GSI Outdoors directly to see if they offer an appropriate sized sink for purchase.

Other than the price, what is the difference between this cookset and the bugaboo cookset from this manufacturer? Do those differences justify the significantly higher price for this product?

The primary difference between the Pinnacle and Bugaboo cooksets is that the Pinnacle series has an upgraded three-layer coating on the pots and frypan. The Teflon Radiance technology improves scratch resistance as well as heat dispersion while cooking.
