Kelty - Redwing 50 Pack - Men's

Category: Backpack

This pack is amazing. Kelty makes fantastic bags and this is my favorite so far. The front loading system is well designed and far superior to top loading. It makes the bag easier to pack and makes 50 liters go a lot farther. I was able to pack this bag better than my 65 liter with the same amount of gear. The side pockets are spacious and the front pocket has handy organization tabs. The material is very tough and reliable in unison with a pack cover. There are a decent amount of daisy chains as well. The only down side to this bag are some relatively simple, missing features. First, there are no hip pockets. This is rather annoying, but you can just buy attachable pockets and add them. Second, the shoulder height cannot be adjusted. Just make sure to go into REI and get a measurement for the pack. This shouldn't be an issue if you get the right size, unless you loan the pack to a friend. Third, the little space between the side pockets and the actual pack goes all the way through as opposed to having a bottom. This can be seen as good or bad honestly. It means that you can't use them as additional pockets, but it also means that you can stick your tent/trekking poles behind the side pocket and have them go all the way through to the side pouches at the bottom of the pack. Since the pack is so spacious, losing the storage space isn't must of an issue. In conclusion, this pack is a great buy. I'll be using it for years and I would recommend it to anyone. I do strongly recommend modifying it by adding some hip belts.

I bought this to replace my old Lowe Alpine Contour Runner 30 daypack which has served me well. The Kelty Redwing is bigger, many more features, supports water bladders, holds my tripod, and looks like it's going to serve me for many more years.

I used this pack once for a short, level hike that lasted about six hours. The bad: The lumpy padding was uncomfortable as it would not fit my body well. No matter how I adjusted the harness (which is a good system) I could not get the padding lumps away from my shoulder blades, which was very irritating. I like a pack with external side pockets, but these are too rounded on the top. I could not get a standard-size 1-liter water botttle to fit in them, which is something I want. The good: It has a mostly-uncluttered waist belt, which I like. I HATE the new fashion of pre-curved waist belts with built-in pockets on them, which are generaly useless for anything other than small bags of M&M's. The harness adjustment is easy and secure, very well done.

I've had this pack for over a year now, and it has served me well. It has been on countless day hikes and a few overnighters. Not waterproof, not a technical pack, but great for general use. Material isn't the toughest. I have a few small wear spots just from it rubbing on rocks during scrambling.

I am pleased with the product. It's versatility with adjustable sizing makes it work for small amounts of supplies to full multi-day backpacking.

This pack replaced a 15 year old Dakine that I truly loved.. This pack has more room to be organized to make hiking easer My new favorite

Here is the one thing you need to know. It's a 50L bag that fits into the overhead storage of a very common and budget conscious airline. It packs like a duffel bag with its dual front zippers and carries like a backpack allowing you to cinch down and secure the load. The side pockets easily hold a quart size bag of toiletries perfectly with a little extra room for other small items. The top zippered compartment is perfect to hold sunglasses and throw small items like phones and a wallet into before going through security screening. Water bottles in the mesh pockets can be reached while actually wearing the pack. The back compartment has small organizing pockets and is of good size. There is also area on the back of the bag to stuff a jacket into and a tucked away handle on the back as well.

I purchased this backpack to replace my tried and true Kelty Redwing 3100 50L bag that I have owned for 6 years. I liked how the new Redwing 50 Pack looked online and ordered it through REI.com. This was a major mistake because when I picked the bag up from the store I realized that it was feather light .... to me at least. I am a very large and strong man. When I took the new backpack to the office and compared it to my Kelty Redwing 3100 I was angry with myself for not going to the store first to handle it for myself before ordering it. The bag was single ply in comparison. It is listed as 420D nylon while my current backpack is 600D nylon. I returned the new pack to REI with no problem. I was a little upset with a store associate on the store floor who claimed that the newer bag was stronger the older one but, I was not buying that stuff.

The stomach strap could have more length and adjustment. If not sell additional short lengths with snap buckles.

Not spectacular. Does the job for the price. Basic for basic use. Good pockets but not as good as its predecessor packs. Performs as expected. Just not mind blowing. Its a backpack

Excellent capacity while extremely mobile and secure. Highly recommend!

Can a small sleeping bag be attached at the bottom of the bag? Is that what the two loops are made for?

The two loops on the bottom of this bag are designed to attach trekking poles or ice axes. You can hang a sleeping bag from these loops if the stuff sack has attachment points.

How do you remove the stay bar.  I found the velcro at the top by the top of the sleeve and see the small metal bar but how do you remove it? Easy to put back in? Trip to Europe on low budget airline and not sure I can use as carry on if too stiff??

Hi there, Dave! We do not recommend removing the stay since it's a structural component of the pack and it can not only be hard to re-install, but reinstalled incorrectly. We recommend checking with your airline instead regarding their carry-on requirements. Cheers!

Could anyone of you let me know what is the size of the frame of the Redwing 50, i.e. the length of the aluminium rod in the bag? Thanks.

The length of the frame is 23 inches.

Is this backpack too big for 5ft and 110lb woman?

The most important measurements to take into consideration when sizing a backpack are the torso length and waist size. REI puts these measurements in the specs tab on backpacks we sell.
