Marmot - Tungsten 2P Tent with Footprint

Category: Tent

Great overall features, but really small inside for two people. My two inflatable mattresses fill the complete width, so not even some room on the sides of the tent. Coming from using a Sierra design Tiros for twenty years, I am used to have extra room inside, even for backpacking. Tungsten 3p has 66" wide whereas 2p only has 54"head/46"at the feet. If only camping and not backpacking, I suggest going for the 3p. Also, no coments on mosquitoes, but the way zipper opens, very many can make it in!!!

Took a good bit of time researching a solid 2p tent for backpacking. This tent was exactly what I was looking for. Narrowed down my selection to TNF Talus 2 and this tent. Great color and slightly more privacy than TNF. Tungsten2 is slightly larger than the Talus2 and his a few more inches on headroom. Yes it weighs a few more ounces than the Talus2 but not noticeable. I am sure some UL hikers will balk at the weight comment. My personal preference is Light gear will give you the best overall value. Combination of quality, durability, features and price. Yes the UL Tungsten2 weighs approximately 2 lbs less but at the cost of $$$ and durability. I can handle a 35-40lb shakedown. I am 6’ and 180lbs my son is 5’10 and 170. We have REI Flash sleeping pads and we fit not to snug in the tent. Room is still available for gear. Two doors are great, handing loop in the top are good for lights or accessory net. Pockets are nicely placed Use of tent is primarily the GSMNP. No leaks and is sturdy even when not guyed out. Purchased on sale 20% for a great deal. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

Took this tent on a week-long car camping trip. On the second night we had to camp in high wind. After scavenging some extra stakes from around the campsite (tent only ships with 6), we had the tent fully staked and guyed down in the most sheltered spot we could find. Despite this, the tent collapsed in the wind. It would spring back to kind of upright when the wind relented, but under load the roof of the tent was slapping us in the face. The poles bent and the hook in the top of the tent ripped out. None of the stakes pulled out of the ground though, so I guess that's nice. Tent was still usable afterward.

This is my first piece of marmot gear, and I’ve taken on a couple trips with my girlfriend with great success, it’s plenty big for 2 people and fairly light as well, it has 2 vestibules one on each side. The main selling points were the price and it came with the ground cloth all the others you had to buy the ground cloth separate

nice product, great value. fits two 6' 1" guys comfortably. very easy to set up

I don't think this tent is too heavy. After 3 nights in the popular zippered hammock system (they're not for everyone) I welcomed the extra weight. I might prefer to carry the UL but durability was a major factor for me since I use this tent mostly for backpacking in wilderness areas.

bought this tent a couple years back and I must say it is a awesome tent. I go backpacking with my dog and I have room for my gear and more. one night it storm like like crazy but never leak one bit. great tent for the price.

Not good for winds over 15 mph. pole broke at swivel point.

First use, and first time sitting it up, was a clear but windy and mild day on a ridgeline of a recent burn area in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. That night night was uneventful. The next day was the same, til around 3 pm when the wind turned to gusts, the temp dropped, the rain came down, and so did the sleet. I spent all afternoon and all night in the tent, hunkered down. I was dry and cozy, with my book, with the weather raging around me. This tent took all of that in stride. For 17 hours. Very impressed.

it rained alot before i got in the tent to hit the hay and the tent ended up on a puddle but everything inside including me was dry. the fly and two entrances made it easy to access all my stuff inside plus gave more room for storage protected from the rain. The poles are so simple to use with a connecting barrel that holds the intersection of the poles together. the easiest and fastest tent i have ever setup. The stakes are even curved for easy removal from the ground and they are hex shaped

I love the structure of the Tungsten 2P! I set it up at a late spring Scout outing in Wisconsin. While we were away from camp for the day, very high winds and pouring rain turned into a blizzard with 5-7 inches of extremely wet and heavy snow. When we returned, out of the dozens of tents that were set up around the grounds, mine was one of 3 or 4 left standing - and not a drop of water inside!

I bought this tent and have only recently been able to start using it. It is a great tent. Easy and quick to set up in less than five minutes. It handles the wind very well even with the fly on. I’ve been in three days straight rain and no leaks. It’s light and very well made.

Have just used this tent once so far. It was easy to set up solo, had good headroom, and thoughtful placement of pockets. I appreciated how much space the "vestibules" under the fly had -- all my gear stayed dry through a rainy weekend. Also appreciated that the footprint was included. Great tent and great price.

Have had this for almost a year now and over a dozen trips. It has held up perfectly and no issues with it so far. Its a bit on the bulky side for backpacking but I really had no issues fitting it in my backpack. I'm very impressed with the quality and this has been the best tent I have owned in this price range.

This is an awesome tent! I've never had it leak, the zippers never catch, and the vestibules on both sides are a great place to put gear -they stay completely dry. Only downside is that it's kinda bulky. Still manageable for backpacking though!

My daughter and I just finished a 5 day backpack river trip on the Escalante River in Utah. we purchased the Tungsten 2P tent and it di very well in the rain and wind. easy to assemble and moderately light and functional for the price

I purchased this tent 3 months ago and have been on multiple trips with varying weather. This tent is so easy to put up and it’s a perfect 2 person tent! Easy, well made and performs great!

Took this backpacking up to gobblers knob. Easy to set up/tear down. Seems very tough...So far no complaints.

I bought this replace 2 roughly 20+ yr old TNF tents. Read mixed reviews of course. I mainly solo backpack with my dog so this seemed like a good option. Plus it was part of REI's big Labor Day sale.

I have now used this tent 5 times for weekend Scout campouts. I like it because as a Scout leader it has enough space to keep the extra paperwork, field books etc that I have to pack with me on an outing. However, it is a little on the heavy side to pack on long backpack trip. All of the outings I have used the tent have been a quarter of a mile or less pack in. I have another much lighter and smaller tent for longer trips. Fortunately I have not camped in the rain with it yet. It looks like the seams are well sealed, but I carry a small bottle of seam sealer with me just in case. The cons: I did not give the tent 5 stars because the vestibules are not the same size. If I was using it to camp with my wife, the smaller vestibule could create a problem on a rainy day/night. Like most new tents there are never enough stakes to stake the tent out properly in stormy weather. I automatically add the extra stakes and tie out line that I may need. It may add weight, but in bad weather the weight is better than losing your shelter. So far I have really liked the tent. I have not had any issues with it. It sets up easily if you practice a couple of times with it. The foot print is a nice addition and fits under the tent properly. For long distant backpacking I would want someone to share the load because it is on the heavy side.

This tent is absolutely fabulous for what it is. No, it may not be ultralight -- but that doesn't mean you can't still schlep it around on the trails. I love the brow pole design; it adds just enough head room that my partner and I can both sit up and change clothes. The floor space is wide enough to accommodate both of our sleeping pads without us ending up on top of each other. If we had a dog, she'd probably fit in the tent too... maybe someday we'll get a chance to test out that theory. (We're small folks, though, about 5'5 and 5'7 and pretty skinny, so take all that with a grain of salt if you're much larger.) Plenty of room in the vestibules for our packs, boots, and camp shoes. Warm enough for 20-30 degree nights with a good bag, and enough ventilation for summer weather. Make sure to cinch the fly straps tight after attaching the buckles to lift the fly off the mesh and prevent condensation.

I bought this tent and took it out camping. Weather was pretty humid and misty (we were camping near a beach) and the inside of the tent aggregated a noticeable amount of condensation on the grey and orange opaque part of the mesh layer. Is this normal?

It is normal for condensation to develop in the conditions described. You can minimize this by properly venting the tent; the easiest way to do so is to leave your vestibules partially unzipped. The cool airflow will prevent the condensation that develops when the warm air inside the tent meets the cool air from outside at the rainfly.

Hi All, I just purchased this tent and am very happy with it. I was wondering what I could do about weight reduction however. Please understand that I am a novice but is it possible to replace the poles with a lighter alternative? Thanks....

We don't suggest using the tent without the aluminum poles.

One REIservice answer says footprint is included in packaged weight. Another REIservice answer says it is not. Which is correct? Both are marked as helpful.

We can confirm that the packaged weight listed on REI.com does not include the footprint. The footprint of this tent weighs approximately 6 oz. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will update the information on REI.com as soon as possible.

Is the floor and rainfly waterproof on this tent?

Yes, they are waterproof. Any seams have been factory taped.

I would be using this on BIKEpacking trips ranging from 1-3 days; possibly splitting the sleep system btwn two people. Possibly also using it for solo trips utilizing a 15L stuff sack for the tent gear, pad, and sleeping bag. Thoughts on packability?

This depends on the compressibility of your sleeping bag and pad. After pulling the stakes and tent poles out, someone can carry the tent body and foot print and the other individual can carry the rainfly. Then, if you each have a cold weather down bag and a regular size, air pad sleeping pad, you may be able to get away with a 15 liter stuff sack each. For individual bike packing trips, where you are carrying the tent alone, you are better to use a 20 liter dry bag to fit everything.

Notorious RLZ

Does this tent come with a stuff sack?

Yes, a 7" x 21" stuff sack comes with this tent.

Ricardo

Could you please tell me the date of manufacture? Many thanks

That information is not available.

Between this and the REI backpacking tents, which is slightly better overall in terms of quality and for inclement weather? The 1, 2, and 3 person tents seem similar in weight and spaciousness.

The Marmot Tungsten 2P Tent is a quality 3-season backpacking tent. For more information about choosing the best size backpacking tent for your needs, we recommend viewing the link below:

How much does the included footprint weigh?

The footprint of this tent weighs approximately 6 oz.

Jeff C

If I were buying a compressible stuff-sack to put the tent body, rainfly and footprint in. What size would you recommend? A 9-10L sack?

A 15 liter compression sack is a good choice for the tent body, rainfly and footprint.

Jack

What is the pole weight and what is the separate tent weight. Looking to see how well it splits up for 2 people

The poles weigh 1 lb. 2 oz. and the tent body weighs 1 lb. 4 oz.

Natsu

What Do you mean by Minimum Trail Weight, How is it different from package weight

Packaged weight includes everything packaged with the tent (tent body, rainfly, poles, stuff sacks, guylines, stakes, etc). The minimum trail weight includes only what is needed to set up the tent to make a shelter; so the stuff sacks, guylines and all but 2 stakes are not necessary for this build.

Hiking

Can I use the tent without its footprint? Trying to reduce weight for rim to rim Grand Canyon hike.Mik

Yes, the tent can be used without the footprint.

I want to buy the new Tungsten UL.  I already own the original Tungsten.  Can I use the footprint with the new UL tent?

This item comes with a matching footprint when purchased at REI. We do not suggest using the footprint from the original Tungsten since each model has a unique design and dimensions.

Keithel

Since the footprint is included, does the packaged weight listed include the footprint?

The packaged weight does not include the included footprint.

Starro01

Can I ship this to a store and set it up before purchase?

You must purchase the tent before we ship it to the store. When you pick up the tent you can ask if there's room to set it up. If you do not care for the tent you're welcome to return it on the spot for a full refund.

Is this floor of this tent a rectangle, or is it angled from head to toe? The pictures make it look symmetrical, but the specs look different.

This tent does taper down from the head to the foot.

Sarah

Is the top of this tent mesh? How far do the side walls go up before the mesh starts? I am looking for a tent that has mesh on the top for desert camping. Thank you!

The top of the tent is mesh. The side walls are partially mesh and partially polyester, and the since the polyester on the walls is lower at one end of the tent and higher at the other end of the tent, the height of the mesh on the side wall varies.

Andy Greely

Does this tent have a fast pitch option, using the rainfly and footprint?

No, this tent is not designed for fast fly set up.

kayyaker

I see there is an 'old' version and a newer version of this tent, the newer version is darker grey where the older version was a light tan (both with 'blaze' contrast color). What are other differences besides color?

There are only a few minor changes including an extra inch of peak height on the newer version and slightly larger second vestibule. The older version had slightly more room at the foot side of the tent, but they both still have the same floor area.

Doppler

Can I pack this in a compression sack? and what Litre would you suggest.

We do not recommend compressing tents. When compressed, plastic fittings or metal grommets can accidentally cause damage to the fly or tent body.

Koala 6613

What is the difference between this (Marmot Tungsten) vs marmot catalyst?

Due to the pole design, the Tungsten offers quite a bit more interior space than the Catalyst. Additionally, the Tungsten has less mesh on the sidewalls, so it does offer a little more privacy if you are camping without the rainfly. Otherwise, the tents are fairly similar.

Gobspur

Where and how many vents does this tent have? The description says full coverage fly with vents, but I can't tell from the picture where the vents are located.

The rainfly on this tent has 1 vent above the door.
