Osprey - Talon 22 Pack - Men's

Category: Backpack

I'm so glad I bought this pack. I am 6'2" 200 lbs and this pack fits and feels great on me. it has a good range of adjustability in the torso length which I good. I tend to like a longer torso pack and this one fits great. the size talon 22 is a perfect size for my day hiking. the items I usually pack are , rain jacket. extra pair wool socks. Cook kit. food bag. 1st aid. toiletries. and there is room for my down jacket. microspikes. and gloves and hat. the pack does have the loops for storing my trekking poles when I'm not using them. also a small pocket located on the shoulder straps which I think it real handy for a snack, knife, vape, or anything else small sized. I haven't hiked with a bladder yet but I will do so as the weather gets warmer. I bought a platy 2 liter bottle and it looks like it will fit fine.

I feel like I searched forever before I found Osprey's bike bags. Most bike bags, it seems, have just one giant compartment and little to no extra pockets, internal or external. I was specifically looking for an additional external pocket in which to put my u-lock, so that when I pulled it out it didn't drag the rest of the contents with it. [Most of] Osprey's bike bags nail this feature. Additionally, these were the first bags I saw that had a way to easily attach your helmet the bag. Once I saw that, I couldn't settle for less.

I purchased this bag days before an xtreme hike I was doing for cystic fibrosis research. It was 26.2 miles in twelve hours on an extremely rough terrain. this bag did the job of carrying everything I needed and paired with the Osprey water bladder it became my best friend on the trail. it has now become my go-to bag on day hikes as well as carrying my books and laptop while I attend Pre-law school. I really can't say enough about it, if you purchase this bag you will not be disappointed.

It's really difficult to make a low-volume pack with a hip belt for a tallish person. The hip belt is great for transferring loads to the hips, but it needs a relatively stiff backpanel to keep the load well controlled, and the back panel needs to be fairly tall for hiking comfort...and to let the load lifters work properly. The Talon 22 is a very sophisticated pack with a lot to offer. I really wanted to like it, but was stopped by its too-floppy back panel. Laterally rigid but vertically flexible, with 10 lbs distributed throughout the lower 2/3 of the bag I could feel the pack pulling backwards on my shoulders as the upper 1/3 of the bag bent outwards. By comparison, a semi-rigid framed daypack like the Stratos 24, Gregory Z30, or Patagonia Nine Trails 20 or 28 are much more comfortable for a long day on the trail. They're also higher volume and heavier, which points out the really tough design tradeoffs a bag manufacturer has to make at this bag size. The Talon 22's great feature set and fitting comfort encourage overloading. Consider this a short-trip, 8-10 lb load pack at most.

I bought this pack over 4 years ago and have used it every day as a work briefcase, a hiking daypack, a bicycle/scooter pack and it is perfect. It is just the right size - carry home groceries from the store, carry computer and files to work, fold up my yoga mat and gym clothes and off I go. Everything I have needed this pack to do, it has done. Can't say enough good things about it. Even after these years of daily hard use, it is in perfect condition. Love this bag.

This is my go to day pack. I used it for everything from day hiking in Joshua Tree to commuting to work. The only problem I have had with the pack is that I was without it for a month. I was driving through Alabama early one morning when I heard a loud thump, and my dog barked. I looked up in my rear view mirror and saw that my Talon 22 flying through the air. I quickly pulled over and hopped out of the car, it was then I noticed that my roof box was open. In my haste to get an early start I had not ensured that it had been properly closed. I jogged down highway 20 and there is was laying on the asphalt, shew what a relief. It was a little banged up, no big deal. I was about sprint over and pick it up when I saw a white work van coming around the curve, and then it happened BOOM a direct hit on my pack, it was more then a little banged up to say the least. There was nothing but a single contact lens that survived. I drove on to Louisville Kentucky where I stayed with some family. The following evening I called Ospery support to explain to them what happened. I told them that I did not think the pack could be repaired, and explained the folly/misfortune in Alabama. They ask me to mail the pack to them and follow up with an email, a week or so later I was contacted by Osprey support. They informed me that the pack could not be repaired. BUMMER! I was ready to go out and purchase a new talon 22. It was then I was told I would need to pick out a color for a new Talon 22. Wait? What? The all mighty guarantee covered even my stupid mistake and my new Talon 22 goes everywhere with me. I don't normally provide reviews, however due to the quality of this product and the all mighty guarantee I will not purchase a pack from another company.

I have hiked with this twice now in fairly warm weather. My back gets sweaty but it doesn't leave a wet mark on my shirt (gross, sorry!) which my fanny back does. I can feel the weight after 3 hours but I'm not sore. The water bottle pockets on the side are a little hard to reach while the pack is on. I'm just used to a fanny pack. Nothing cuts or binds. The pocket on the waist strap fits my GPS nicely and the pack stays on and doesn't jiggle even when I have to jog across the street. It holds 2 cameras, 2 books, a water bladder, a wallet and a phone and still has a ton more room. One of the lighter day packs and seems to be made well. I didn't see that it comes in red. I'm kind of bummed. I got the gray one.

Whether biking to class daily for a few years, doing field work in the wallowa mountains, in Montana deserts, Redwood downpours, this bag has held strong through it all. The mesh is still stretchy and taut (ripped in one place when i laid against sharp rock, i consider it my fault, no material could resist scrapes like that). Would recommend to anyone for anything

I bought this since my last day pack was past it's reasonable life expectancy. This pack is light and breaths well. I am tall and the med/large hip belt tends to ride a little high but still does a good job. The outer stash pocket works well for rain jackets.

****THIS IS A MEN'S PACK.*** I have seen a lot of negative female reviews about this pack and it needs to be noted that this is a men's pack. The female counterpart to this pack is the Osprey Tempest.

I mailed ordered the M/L Talon 22 as my local REI didn't have one in stock. This is one of the highest rated day-packs. It Is very nice pack all around, and has many similar features to my older Osprey Exos 48 (Normal Overnight Backpack).

I love this pack. And it happily supports my 3 liter bladder that I use in my other Osprey pack. Very comfortable, very good size for a long day hike. Plenty of pockets. I'm always the guy carrying the extra stuff for the gang I'm hiking with. Extra snacks (because, they forgot), the 1st Aide kit, etc.

This backpack is well designed. Lots of space and ventilation on the back. The only minus is that because the backside is no sturdy ( what I really like btw) it’s sometimes hard to find your stuff in the backpack. You have to organize it well or put your things in separate bags, what I did after a few days. The front bag is very handy for your coat or wet stuff.

I purchased the Osprey Men's Talon 22 Pack for a recent week long cycling trip in Scotland. The pack was super comfortable while cycling even loaded down with my camera gear (DSLR, 70-200 and 16-35 lenses). I used it as a carry on and for day hikes as well. I'd highly recommend this pack.

This bag has a great pocket configuration, I like the smaller top pocket for keys, wallet, phone the zipper is also hidden nicely so it’s very discrete for travel on cities where pick pocketing is bad. This holds a hydration pack really nicely and the back and hip padding is very comfortable and breathable. I like lid lock for cycling and side pockets for water bottles if not using the hydration slot. All in all would highly recommend this for a day bag, hiking, cycling and overnight or weekend trips for a light packer.

I struggled long and hard making the decision on what small pack to purchase. I narrowed it down to the Talon 22 and the North Face Litus 22. There were two main factors that tipped the scale in favor of the Talon 22. The small outside pocket on the front of the Talon 22 has a buckle closure. The Litus 22 has no fastener. The other major factor was that the Talon 22 has load lifter straps. I would have preferred if the belt pockets were a little larger on the Talon. That is one place that the Litus won out, but overall the Talon was the best option for me. Other reviewers mentioned wing tip design on the front as being something they greatly disliked. While I wasn't thrilled about it in the beginning, it turned out to be as visually distracting as I expected.

I bought this new pack because the REI specs indicated that the M/L size would fit up to a 50in. waist. - well the specs. are wrong. The waist on the M/L size is just about like the smaller size it will only fit up to about a 44/45in. waist . So are the specs. wrong? Nobody has been able to tell me. When I returned this pack to the REI Store the M/L pack in the store had the same problem. I would have liked this pack if the waist was as advertised.

I'm a woman with a longer torso so the majority of backpacks made for women just aren't comfortable on me. I tried this pack and am loving it. It's comfortable, roomy enough and I can easily access the side pockets while wearing it.

I purchased this pack approximately 2 weeks ago and have taken it out for several day hikes. Size is perfect. Pack is comfortable. I’m a big dude (6’2”, 275), and have had no issues with fitting it properly to my body. It’s been from Ohio to Galveston to Louisiana in the past 2 weeks, carrying everything from gear to clothes to a MacBook. I would certainly recommend it, and Osprey as a whole. Great company, great gear. I’ll be buying one of their larger packs in the near future.

I've had this backpack for almost 2 years now and I absolutely love it. I've used it for short hikes and long hikes packed to the brim with no complaints. I started out using it for hiking and it's so comfortable and versatile that I use it for almost everything. I tried a lot of different packs before finding this one, the Osprey Skarab, Osprey Manta, Gregory Zulu, and a few others I can't remember, and this one was far superior to all in comfort and functionality.

I bought this pack primarily for day hikes. It Is not set up for the amount of water I must carry. I realize a filter system will help. Even still I burn through water faster than anyone I have ever met. Thus I need to port this heavy cargo and needed a frame to help put weight on my hip.

I jettisoned this pack at a trailhead, after ripping it off, dumping the contents and kicking it a few times, I hated it so much. Where should I start? The zipper pulls are poorly designed, and you need both hands to operate the zippers which was particularly irritating for the pockets on the waistband, which you expect to be able to operate with one hand. The torso length adjustment was done by un-velcro-ing the entire shoulder strap assembly from inside the pack and then reinstalling it. The problem was that it was impossible to get the thing both aligned straight and the right length. The side pockets had some sort of strap adjustment across them or inside them - either way, it made it extremely difficult to get things in or out of those pockets. The side pockets were also too deep, so I almost dislocated my shoulder any time I tried to get things in or out of them without removing the pack. I would rather use a cheap pack from a discount store than use this thing.

love this bag. holds a tone of stuff and is light. great for hot days also as its breathable. the only issue i have is the bottom stitching on one side looks a bit flawed and might be coming loose. i'm really bummed about this as REI doesnt carry this color (green) in the store...why...i have no idea. guess i will use it and see what happens, but its a real bummer.

The pack fits just right and takes the load off of my shoulders and spine. I have a very long torso and the the hip belt fits reasonably well. (I am 6'2" with a 32" inseam.) The hipbelt pockets are fantastic -- keeping my snacks within easy reach without taking off the pack. Also, the water bottle holders are super stretchy so that they hold multiple sizes.

I love this backpack primarily because it is so light, but it's also very comfortable with heat- and moisture-dispersing features which keep it from getting soaked with sweat and help my back keep cool. My only complaint is that the bottom of the shoulder straps cross the belt packs and reduce the ability to stuff things in them when the backpack is on.

If you are looking for a sleek compact pack for day hikes, running or biking, this is it. Also, you get the ability to customize the wear, the reliability, and the toughness that has come to be associated with the Osprey brand. The little extra's are what really made me fall in love the Talon, from the helmet strap to the whistle on the chest strap!

The size of this bag is perfect to hold a good amount of water, food, small gear and some extra clothing. The straps are very comfortable and the vented back is comfortable and does not make you hot. The pockets are set up well and easily accessible. If it had a rain cover it would be ideal.

I’ve tried a variety of day packs so far and this has proved to be the most comfortable for my 6’1 frame. No bells and whistles, just a simple lightweight bag with good back ventilation and padding. My only complaint is that there is not a compression strap near the top of the bag.

I ordered this pack because of the great rev'ws. I was looking for a smaller pack to use for long day hikes. I loved the lines and look on the pack; however, when I tried it on unloaded, it just felt too small. I'm 6'2" and 205 lbs.

I really like the light weight of the pack but perhaps more important is its adjustable torso. I have a 23 inch torso and I adjusted the pack to fit. It is a good daypack for summer hikes. During the winter I prefer a larger pack for cold weather gear when the temperature drops.

Osprey Talon 22 Pack. M/L is too small for me. I was measured at the Marina REI store be 18-21 inches Torso. So, I expected the M/L would fit. It holds my stuff. I removed a wire that was for something I don't use. I will probably remove the helmet holder.

I got this as a step up from a $25 pack from Wal-mart which served its purpose of getting me outside and moving more. This pack is more than enough pack for a day hike. I am planning on using it for a couple of overnights to see how that works out for me.

Absolutely loving this bag so far. It has just enough room and the fabric seems to have just enough stretch to accommodate that little extra. The backing contours to your back perfectly and even fully loaded, this bag feels weightless.

I really like this pack for dayhikes. Plenty of compartments to keep your things organized. Lightweight and comfortable on the shoulders even with larger loads. Lots of nice features that make this great for a day on the trails.

I bought this a few weeks ago and have had it out for several day hikes. Really comfortable and easy to use. Love the waist strap pockets for small items like lip balm and snacks. Works great with the hydration pack.

Bought this for a friend to take his minimal items while traveling. I chose this product because I love the quality of this brand & all the thoughtful extras they put into making this model. My friend really liked it!

Upgraded my old school backpack that I was using as a daypack for the Osprey Talon, and I couldn't be happier. Excellent pack, just the right size with plenty of pockets. The water reservoir easily holds my 3L.

Taken this on a couple day hikes with three kids; simply, large enough for the task at hand without wishing for more space. At 6’1”, no issues on front with the M/L sizing. All-in-all, zero complaints

Bought this pack after doing considerable research of it and many other brands. It's my first Osprey pack. It is outstanding. I've used it 5 times in 3-4 weeks several different ways. Key features I like best are the hip belt and the Airscape back rest. The clerk at REI showed me how to fit it and then properly adjust it each time I put on the pack.

help my hip strap is to small or im to big lol I just brought the talon 22 I have a waist size of 38 the straps will not making it. where can I buy a longer waist strap??

This amazingly light well breathable backpack is perfect from traveling all over the globe two excursions into the mountains this Osprey backpack will do it all

Great for day hikes! Big enough for a 10 miler while staying quite comfortable. I suggest asking for help to adjust it if its your first pack.

Perfect size for any single day hike! Plus, the long frame and padded hip pads makes it super comfortable, even with relatively heavy loads.

Traveled around Hawaii for two weeks with it it was great perfect size well-balanced very comfortable. I am very happy with the purchase.

This is exactly what I wanted and couldn’t be happier with it! It’s the perfect size and weight, and I love how it fits. Great purchase!

We really enjoy this product. It fits a lot of stuff. The only complain is after a long period of time my shoulders do begin to ache.

The fit and function all work together for one great day pack. More than enough capacity even for over nighter.

Great pack, comfortable and light. Now 5 others in my hiking group also use this pack for day hiking.

I love this bag! Took it hiking in Banff and Jasper and it was perfect. Very lightweight.

Like the design with back support and water bladder cavity

Great light-weight pack that’s very comfortable all day.

I bought this pack for day hiking in the Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania area and I usually do between 10-15 miles per outing with a pack base weight of 6.8lbs (due to advanced medical training I carry a slightly more comprehensive trauma/medical kit ) excluding food/water. I’ve never had any issue being able to comfortably carry everything I need for a 6-8 hour outing in the woods. The pack fits comfortably and once you find the shoulder strap adjustments it doesn’t really need adjusting again. The hip belt does a good job of keeping the weight on your hips and keeping your shoulders feeling good.

Can you reach the water bottles when the pack is on? I don't use a d hydration pack, and don't want to take the pack off to get a drink!

It is possible to reach a water bottle from the stretch side pockets without removing the pack, but it might be easier for some people to just remove the pack.

Will a 3.0 liter platypus fit in the hydration sleeve of the Talon 22 in a small?

The dimensions of the hydration sleeve on this pack are 17.2 x 8.8 inches.

Sush

Can this fit a 13 inch laptop?

Good question. Yes, this pack can carry up to a 13" laptop, and it is recommended that you do not use the hydration sleeve if you're carrying the laptop.

Jennifer

My Osprey 46 Kyte is a xs/small. I cant seem to find that size for the talon. Will the small/medium be comparable?

Yes, there is some overlap. The S/M size in the Talon fits as wearer with a torso length of 16 to 19 inches long, while the Kyte's XS/S size fits a torso 13 inches to 17 inches in length.

Sean

I'm really interested in your product Osprey Talon 22L day pack (Large). Just wondering what's the demension of the hip belt pocket? I'm thinking about putting my Iphone 6 plus in it, don't know if it fit.  Looking forward to hearing back from you

The hip belt pocket is approximately 6 x 3 ½ x 3 inches.

I received a Talon 22 as a gift. I love the pack however it is slightly too small for me. Is there any identification on the pack of whether it is the M/L or S/M size?

With the shoulder straps facing you, look to the right of the pack just above the hipbelt. There should be a small black tag that indicates size.

TXNole

Can this pack be packed/condensed in my larger Atmos to serve as a hydration daypack, or is the frame too rigid to be packed down?

This pack is not designed to be foldable. However, you may be able to attach this pack to the outside of your larger pack for transport and additional storage.

JSMK

How should the torso and waist/hip be measured to determine proper size?  Is "torso" the length from neck to waist, or girth around the chest? Where should waist/hip be measured?  In the tech specs is the 1st range is for S/M and 2nd is for M/L?

What size hydration bladder fits in this pack?

This pack holds up to a 3 liter reservoir.

This version has no frame and newer version has an internal frame? So is it to stiff to stuff into a larger pack?

The internal frame helps with weight distribution along the back and hips, and may hinder the ability to stuff into a larger pack.

Tom L

Are the hip belt pockets more rigid than previous model? When not buckeled, do the hip belt pockets support themselves straight out against the waist, or hang down like the previous model? It is my only pet peeve with the previous model.

The hip belt on this pack is more rigid than the previous version. They will hold themselves up when not buckled together.

Dugong

What is the difference between this one and the version on sale at REI garage? Is that last year's model?

This is the 2017 model of the pack while the other pack you have mentioned is the previous model. This pack has been updated with a new backpanel and hipbelt for a better and more comfortable suspension system.

jane s

I am considering buying this pack but am concerned that side pockets for water bottles will not hold bottles in place. I do not want hydration pack. I had a new REI flash 22 but the water bottles fell out when putting on the pack ot leaning over. will thi

These pockets will be able to securely hold your water bottles, and there is an extra strap to cinch the bottle securely inside its pocket.

Cindy

Is this pack waterproof?

This pack is not waterproof, it is water resistant.

Jim1

Is the hip belt removable?

No, the hip belt is not removable.

Will you be getting this in stock in the Ultramarine blue color?

As of February 2017, we don't have plans to stock Ultramarine Blue.

LuvsTheOutdoors

I'm comparing the S to the Women's Tempest 20 M. Are the dimensions and capacities basically the same? The men's has a pocket on the shoulder strap. Any other differences? I'm a 5'2" female, so wondering if the small men's would be too big.

The Talon is a 22 liter and the Tempest is a 20 liter which is a 2 liter difference for the packs; their features are almost identical. The Tempest and Talon have different measurements for the torso, you will need to measure your back length to determine which size will be correct for you. For how to measure your back length refer to our expert advice article by following the link below:
