Backpacker's Pantry - Huevos Rancheros Egg Scramble Mix - 2 Servings

Category: Camp Kitchen

Read the Instructions. Know what you're getting into. This will take you 20 minutes to make breakfast, but once it's done it's awesome! Delicious and no big deal to prepare if you're used to cooking for yourself at home anyway. Cooks up to a fluffy texture. We eat a high protein & high fat diet, so we pumped this up every day with extra OvaEasy powdered eggs. Perfect.

It’s not a greasy spoon, but it’s still a tasty outdoor meal. Even though the directions say “cold or hot water and then let stand for twenty minutes”, I would let it stand thirty to forty minutes when using cold water to fully reconstitute the dried beans.

This was the first freeze dried meal I have ever had, and I was pleasantly surprised. I remember trying MREs 15-20 years ago and thought it tasted like..not good. Now I have never been a fan of the powdered eggs, but considering the work required to make the meal... I can for go the consistency, mainly because of all the flavor that was in there. I am thinking I would replace camping meals and hiking meals with these, because they are so easy to make. A+ from me, I would highly recommend as a meal, and will definitely buy in the future.

These made very tasty backpacking breakfast burritos with a little Taco Bell hot sauce squirted on top. Followed directions on package and had no problems with how they turned out. Remember--DON'T eat these after just adding water. It's raw egg. You have to cook the rehydrated eggs in a skillet.

This stuff was horrible. We had used a different breakfast from "another brand" the day before and that was pretty good. If we had started out eating this one I would never have even tried eating another one. This was not worth buying or eating. I would rather just eat a nice packet of instant oatmeal than this grainy, tasteless stuff.

We had these on a recent trip to the BWCA, and of the three people on the trip, one liked them and went back for seconds, one thought they were good but not great, and one thought they were ok but said he'd bring them again. Prep was fine, other than our cook not reading the bit about using a non-stick pan; even so, the finished product was quite edible.

I had been leary of trying rehydrated eggs and after eating this nasty egg soup concoction I now know why. The flavor wasn't to bad but the beans took forever to rehydrate and the eggs turned into a gritty soup like mixture that together was one of the most awful things I've ever eaten. They should use this stuff on fear factor!

Directions: Remove and discard enclosed oxygen absorber before beginning food preparation. Add 1-1/4 cups (300mL) of water. Blend well. Let stand for 10-30 minutes to allow the beans to rehydrate (boiling water accelerates rehydration time). Blend again. Cook over low heat in a nonstick pan. Stir frequently.

Yeah, we followed the directions. We tried it twice but it just didn't cook up correctly for us. The result was tasty but the texture was like scrambled eggs that weren't quite done...and this was after cooking fifteen minutes more than the instructions said. One possible explanation: Both times we were at 11,000 feet (and yes, we doubled the cooking times to compensate). Maybe this meal just doesn't work at high altitudes.

This was super gross. I had Mountain House eggs one morning on my most recent backpacking trip and though they looked like those styrofoam peanuts you get in shipping packages, they ended up being pretty decent after being rehydrated. These....were....completely....disgusting. I have to say, this was the worst breakfast I've ever choked down.

I tried these eggs 2 times. Each time the eggs were very runny and did not care for the texture. Once I drained the excess liquid, the texture was better but felt I lost a lot of flavor. They were very salty too.

Generally I make and bring my own grub to the woods but Backpackers Pantry Huevos Rancheros is one of my most frequently purchased 'pre-packaged' meals. One package makes one good serving size for me; not sure how I would feel having to divy it up between 2 mouths but otherwise I still have a few more packages waiting to use (extremely long shelf life so no worries ther)

This product is small and easy for packing; however, it takes a really long time to cook. If you have all the time in the world and don't mind doing extra dishes, then by all means this product will suit you. If you care about taste, you'll be better off buying any of the other dehydrated egg products offered at REI and throwing some of your own seasoning into the mix.

For a distaer readiness kit, this is not badm however; for mountaineering it is unpractical because you need a pan to cook food in, where other freeze dried meals simply need a hot water added into the package. With that kind of convenience, Backpackers Pantry meals are antiquated, unless you want to carry extra pans and clean after your finished cooking.

My bad that I didn't read this package carefully enough, and thought this meal could be prepared with only boiling water. The result, without a skillet, is a tasty - but completely runny, unappetizing mush. As my backpack is limited to a Jetboil and simple mess kit, this was not the right product for me. I did appreciate that the eggs are vegetarian.

I won't buy this again. They used powdered eggs and mixed in some spices. I came out with a very disgusting look. The taste was barely okay. If it was all I had, I would eat it, but I would look around very hard for something else. I would stick with a brand that used freeze-dried eggs instead of powdered eggs.

REI has this package displayed with all the Freeze-Dried food that only requires adding boiling water. This requires boiling water and then you fry the product up in an oiled pan. I was at 11,000 feet on a 7 day pack trip when I realized this required cooking. I would give the meal zero stars if possible.

I bought this thinking it was a bag meal. It needs to be hydrated then cooked in a skillet. Luckily I brought a couple extra days worth of food on a kayak trip on the outer gulf coast of Alaska. I'm bring the unopened package back. No room for a skillet on week long kayak trips!

Had these on a recent trip. Probably the best eggs I’ve had on the trail. The only issue is they are not ready to eat out of the bag, you have to rehydrate then cook in a pan like you would at home. If you have the time and pack the equipment it’s well worth it.

The amount of water called for is far too much. This came out more like a soup. Despite being soupy it was very gritty and didn't have much flavor.

I usually like this companies meals but my wife and I agree this is not a meal to recommend. We followed directions and even soaked the eggs longer than recommended and the beans were still crunchy. The spice mix was not something I recognized nor liked.

Have no idea who thought this was possible to eat. After following instructions which included beating eggs for 2 minutes (what??! I am at an altitude in freezing rate and I'm supposed to do what?), what came out is some disgusting eggy syrup.

It didn't asorb the water and I could see the powder floating around. I tried a bean and it was still crunchy. I let it sit twice as long as directed just to be sure. When I dumped it out it looked like vomit which pretty much sums it up.

He loved it. To be clear though, he really hasn't tried it yet. It's more about the idea that there's such a thing as dehydrated huevos rancheros. It was a gag gift for his birthday, and it's a huge success as it made him smile.

My fav breakfast out of all the menus. Requires a pan, but... well meh. It's good without pan cooking if you're on the trail and don't want to pack a pan. I always buy at least a few of these whenever I hit the trail. Happy Trails!

The texture of course will never be the same as freshly made scrambled eggs, but having the beans mixed with the eggs helps the texture A LOT. Flavor-wise, it was quite good. Not to salty, not hot spicy, just sufficiently seasoned

Just picked this up on a whim while on my way out of town to camp. What a disappointment! It was runny and gross to eat. The flavor wasn't so bad, but it was like egg soup. Not a good effort on the part of Backpacker's Pantry.

You had to cook the eggs a second time after adding boiling water. Too much of a hassle and too many dirty dishes. I was looking for meatless and didn’t check for easy to make

I actually like trail food. Even when I car camp, I'll eat from a bag, its quick, clean, and usually pretty tasty. This was ok. Now I am not really a huge Eggs Rancherous anyway, but yeah, just ok. Not bad. Just ok.

This stuff is awful. I cooked it exactly as the directions told me to and it barely passed off as food. I don't think I'd even feed this to my dog. Go with Backpacker's Pantry, their breakfasts are spot on.

I love this powdered egg breakfast. Relatively light weight and reasonably priced (but can remember when it cost less). I have a large appetite so 1 package is good for. Might be a stretch to feed 2

Eww. Don't do it. The texture is mad weird even when you follow the directions. Which require 2 separate containers. Something to boil water and something non-stick to fry in.

What an awful product. When you buy backpacking food you expect to be able to eat it on the trail. This requires a pan to cook. REI should not sell this.

It was a very delicious and filling breakfast meal after a long 10 mile hike in the Grand Canyon the day before. It lifted my spirits and energy.

Okay, we didn't fully read the package. The whole part where you have to cook it after soaking it? Total fail for a backpacking meal.

Taste is delicious but requires cooking, not just rehydrating. Not a breakfast when you want to break camp quickly, but plan on

I thought I followed the instructions. But... this stuff was so gross I couldn’t finish it. Was not fluffy. No flavor.

At 7,900 ft, followed the directions carefully but the contents remained a soupy mixture. The dogs ate it though.

This is easily the best tasting breakfast meal I've tried. I will purchase this for every backpacking trip!

Nastiest dehydrated breakfast ever. It's like a hot pseudo egg smoothie. The texture is disgusting.

For me this is a breakfast staple. Relatively easy to prepare and tasty
