Sea to Summit - X-Mug

Category: Camp Kitchen

Check out my video review on this mug!

I received this as a gift recently for the holidays. I was excited to use it and was giving it a once over before a trip tomorrow when the rim cracked. It seems like a neat little cup and I'm not sure why it broke so easily but I was merely holding it, applied a little pressure to fold the cup in once it dried, and the rim cracked. Structurally it seems fine, although I wish I would've had a chance to try it out in the mix.

My son and I used these on our last outing. During initial use they tasted and smelled strongly of rubber. After washing thoroughly they now taste and smell of coffee and hot cocoa respectively... and RUBBER. Great concept. Terrible material.

I remember having collapsible plastic cups as a kid, so the first time I saw the X-Mug it reminded me of those cups. I first purchased one for my son in lime green and he used it on a backpacking trip we took in Ocala National Forest in late December. It was very cold, but the X-Mug allowed him to make hot cocoa and still hold on to the cup without scalding. It was hard to lose because of its bright color, and for my son, losing gear is a sure bet. He loved the cup so much he kept it with him in his pocket for easy access.

This is a cool little mug. I got it to use in conjunction with my Sea to Summit X-Bowl, which I also love. It folds down nice and flat and fits inside the X-Bowl. It is just about as heavy as a non-collapsible hard plastic cup is. For being as small and lightweight as it is, it has a lot of capacity. I think that if I wanted to, I could ditch the X-Bowl and eat out of the mug too, it's so large. The mug didn't get too hot, even with near-boiling water in it. Great for keeping you warm with some hot chocolate on chilly mornings!!

I bought 2 of these for a recent 6-day backpacking trip where we needed to save space in our packs for carrying group gear. The mugs are lightweight and pack way smaller than a regular mug or cup. We only used our mugs for coffee and hot cocoa so we didn't have the odor/taste issues that some people reported. The silicone is sturdy enough to set a full mug on the ground without having to worry about it collapsing or tipping over. Also, you can hold onto the mug by the silicone sides instead of the firm top lip.

The X-mug has been with me for 1500 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail as well as thru hiking the Colorado Trail this summer. I keep it in my cooking pot with my pocket rocket stove. It handles hot and cold very well. I like the measurement marks on the side for measuring water for cooking meals. It can be a pain to clean with all of the accordion folds, but this is no big deal--I carry a few paper towels in my cook gear to take care of it.I though it would lose its' ability to compress flat after many uses, but it never has--it is the same as when I bought it 2 years ago.

I bought this cup and the bowl back in 2012.. it STILL tastes like soap. I've washed it by hand, in a river, and in a hobart commercial dishwasher. It's a strong taste which really makes me question whatever they used to make the product.

I have had this cup for a couple years. Generally when I backpack i use my canteen cup but i liked the measurements on this. That being said I didnt use it all that much during those two years and on my last trip last week it split in two places leaking all over the place. The seam where it collapses cracked in two spots. Its really really thin in that area. I had always been concerned with this spot but figured it would last. It did not. So I will stick with my canteen cup and scribe measurements on it and be done with the rubber gimicks.

Hot or cold drinks be held in this fold up cup. I used it while skiing and kept it in my pocket until we would break for hot chocolate. Given resorts charge 6.50 for a cup of hot chocolate, we bring our own in small packages, and use the cup for the free hot water. Cleans up easy, and just fold up, put it in your pocket u til lunch and do it all over again. Very creative invention.

As the other reviewers noted, the collapsable cup and plate eventually taste permanently like soap and whatever else you put in it. No matter how much I clean the cup, my water tastes like soap and the cumin chili that was in it several washes ago. I have opted to go back to the old non-collapsible cup and plate option, unfortunately. However, the collapsable concept is awesome and has saved a lot of stress in terms of packing shape and backpack portability. The caribeaner will have to do from now on, as the cup transport mechanism.

I used this during a winter climb in the Sierra Nevada mountains last year. I purchased this product because it was compact and lightweight. During the climb, we were caught in some pretty nasty weather and had to dig in. My group squeezed into the larger tent to cook and hang out and wait out the storm and this is when I realized I had not made the best choice. The plastic is so thin it was uncomfortable to hold and yet I could not set the collapsable bowl down for fear of spilling in the tent. I found it difficult to clean as well. I would say this is a decent product unless you are confined to a tent as I was. The risk of spill is too great and in tight quarters and near below zero temps, a spill would not have been cool. Despite bulk, I will use a mug with a lid for all future alpine climbing.

So I really like these mugs. I use them for food and coffee. I've been using them for years.

I purchased this nub to serve as my all around drink and food container for a recent hike. Upon first use on trail I came to find it sustained a small hole in the rubber accordion side. Some space duct tape fixed the leak for remained of Trip but would not use again if any abrasion to material could happen while in your pack.

The cup is light and packs small but picks up dust and dirt easily. The silicone seems to generate static charge which is why it picks everything up. It dealt great with both hot and cold liquids and I didn't notice any particular odors sticking around or flavor leaching. However, without a lid it is difficult to clean on the trail with a small amount of water, also the ridges in the cup increase cleaning difficulty. I would probably buy a more simple cup with easier to clean walls and a lid if I needed another one.

This is a simple, lightweight, and compact cup to take with you on backpacking trips. The fact that it packs down so small is great. You can fit it almost anywhere. It holds a good amount of volume and keeps your hands fairly insulated from hot liquids. My only complaint is that it does take on a slight smell from whatever is in it. In my case, I wanted it for morning coffee, so even after a good washing it still has a slight coffee smell. That is totally fine with me, but it is worth knowing before purchase.

I got the cup and the bowl for backpacking. While they pack down nicely, they really attract dirt, which ends up clinging to it. I will use them as dog bowls now and use a non-collapsable metal or plastic bowl for myself when going backpacking.

I ordered the cup and plate. The cup tore the first time I took it out of the package so I bought a new one. While it was handy because it took up little room, I didn't enjoy using it because I kept worrying it would tear again.

Though I liked the design, it failed on its first trip. Being silicone, it was unreparable. The folds are thin and easily tear or were cut or damaged. I went three weeks w/ no cup.

Loved that it was light and folded compact so easy to take on our backpacking trip! We used it for soup and had hot cocoa. It wasn't hot to hold!

I like the large capacity yet it's easy to store. A convenient and useful addition to all activities at home, traveling or outdoors.

I am a wet-shaver. Meaning I use a safety razor and I make lather with a puck of shaving soap and a brush. When traveling, I use the Sea to Summit X-mug as my shaving brush/lather bowl. In that capacity, it works well for my purposes: a) it holds my brush and lather without tipping over, b) it drys easily before packing, and c) it folds flat and easily fits in my shaving kit (right along side my Sea to Summit X-bowl which functions as my shaving basin).

I bought this for my son to use with his light my fire lunch kit for his Trail Life USA troop campouts. He absolutely loves the cup a modern mess kit must for your scouting kiddo. I do reccomend getting a 2nd cup a little more soqlid for all day camp use however as this one would be a little flimsy for being tossed around. This one packs away nicely in his kit then for toss around the camp cup I got him a usa made glow in the dark uglymugz camp cup.

I use this primarily for food, not even for drinks and it is perfect. Hot food doesn't burn your hands due to its material. Folds up perfectly to make it easily stuffed into your pack. It is great for drinks as well! I simply do not drink enough warm drinks to use it that often, but using it as a bowl as well has lightened up my pack weight and caused zero problems. I love Sea to Summit brand, and this product is excellent for backpacking uses.

I purchased this for the reason of having something small and easy to use to eat out of. It's lightweight and gets the job done. Easily cleaned and worth it's weight when out there. I was told from another that when used for fluids because of it being collapsable that if your not careful you might fold it in on itself a bit and have the fluid come out on you(I have not personally had this issue but I use it for food items and not liquids).

I needed a collapsible bowl/cup for backpacking so I chose this.

I was looking for a small water bowl for my dog - and was lamenting the fact that travel bowls for dogs are not easily washed. So I headed over to the camping aisle and found this. It is absolutely perfect and can even be formed into a mini 'dog dish' shape. I love that it folds flat for the glove box, and can fit in my pocket for day hikes with the pooch. The best part??? It is about half the price of bowls made for dogs!

Looked like a great buy at first but disappointed on the very first backpacking trip. The cup is made from a material that has a tendency to attract dust and dirt via static electricity. Its virtually impossible to keep clean. It would be a great product if it wasn't for this problem.

I like the size and collapsibility of the cup. It feels like food grade silicon, but must not be since it easily transmits heat to your hand. I was surprised that my morning cup of coffee was heating my hand through this cup. I had to hold it by the rim until the coffee finally cooled. It was nice to collapse an d carry in a cargo pocket, but make it from heat insulating silicon next time to get 5 stars.

I've used this mug about 5 times now on my hikes, mainly for drinking coffee, and once for oatmeal. It is a nice size for 10oz of coffee without spilling, easy to clean, and doesn't burn my hands. Bad part is that I can't get that coffee smell out of the mug.

I purchased this mug to take along on a backpacking trip. The concept is great: a very collapsible, lightweight, mug that can handle hot contents.

As soon as I saw this cup in the store, I knew it was perfect for what I needed. It collapsed! It it was compact, light, AND it was a cup. It was the perfect size to fit atop the cooking system in one of my stuff sacks--a sort of kitchen stuff sack. It was also the vessel that provided the place for the coffee while reusing the pot to cook a meal. It was a useful item on the trail.

I really like this mug. The way it compacts down, the weight, the ridges help your fingers get a better grip to hold it with, the graduation marks, both cup and ml marks are great. The spongy feel is fun as well. It's a keeper! I tested this as soon as I got home. I boiled some water and made a pumpkin spice tea. It takes 2 minutes or so before you can hold with bare hands if you've added boiling water, but that's expected. Here's the minor glitch or warning if it's important to you. The cinnamon in the pumpkin spice tea has pretty much impregnated itself into the silicone. I've rewashed it numerous times with boiling water, dish soap, baking soda & vinegar and still I can detect a cinnamon smell very easily. That being said, I still love this mug and think I will just go buy another and not use any type of cinnamon flavored or any hard spice type of drinks in it as I am concerned about "scents" on the trail.

I appreciate how this folds down to nothing and takes up almost no space. The many graduated markings help when you need to know exactly how much liquid you are adding to a freeze dried meal. It protects my digits from hot liquid and is easy to clean. From whiskey, beer, coffee, & crystal light - I've not had any residual smells after I cleaned it. Dishwasher safe too!

For the most part these cups are practical, however we own two of these and much to our suprise while in the back country we figured out that the two cups were not the same size even though the graduated markings on the inside stated otherwise. They both say 2 cups but one is about 1/3 of a cup smaller (measured it when we got home). Disappointing from Sea to Summit.

Regular cups/mugs are bulky and heavy. This thing is amazing as it flattens - takes very little space and weighs just 2.1 oz. Flattened, it fits into my cook pot but expanded it's a full 2-cups large. It even has measuring-cup markings. I drink hot coffee in this and there is no plastic taste and I can hold the cup by the rim and not get burned. I love it.

You can buy cheaper but this cup stayed quite comfortable holding a hot cup of coffee. Durable, easily cleans with soap and water. Dependable and like I said, much more comfortable holding a hot beverage than those made cheaper. You get what you pay for. There are measurements embossed into the side so that's also a big difference from others I've tried

Not as awesome as the X-bowl, and if I didn't have the bowl I might not get one of these, but the nestling feature makes it worth it. works well for everything I tried, but a cheap plastic GSI cup would do it too, or a nalgene-type cup. never had a taste or smell stick around, even with tea, hot chocolate, and some ungodly combinations of booze.

I bought this about a month ago for hiking trips with my pup. It's been great. Big enough to get him plenty to drink, shrinks back down when you're done with it, and super light weight! It's a little awkwardly deep, but overall a great purchase! And dishwasher safe is an added bonus. I'll definitely use it for myself when I backpack, too

This cup was applealing to me because it is lightweight and compact. After using it on only a few trips it started leaking. I think it may be a wise choice to invest in something a little more solid.

I washed this in the dishwasher with everyday dishwasher soap. Now it smells/tastes like the soap. I like the design of this product. I won't clean it with dishwasher soap again, and hope the smell leaves eventually. I have yet to try lemon juice. I did not notice any cleaning recommendations on the packaging etc. so that is a negative.

I bought one of these before a car camping trip, just to check it out. We absolutely loved it and went back to buy a second one. I was nervous that it would be too flimsy or that it would get too hot with my coffee in it, but it was outstanding. It collapses down so it will work great for our upcoming backpacking trip also!

I bought this for my son (8yo) to use on his first backpacking trip. We both loved it. We dubbed it the Cup-Bowl-Frisbee, or CBF for short. He used it for everything.

I wrote a similar review for the sea to summit bowl:

I got these because they could fold flat and not take up much space. I found them even more awesome when I discovered the gradient lines for measuring = cooking aid.

With it's reasonable large size, I use this as both my bowl and cup when I'm backpacking. It's light and folds up very compact. The silicon does tend to hold on to the smell of whatever was last consumed. I didn't find it overwhelming but it was noticeable. Overall, this was a good purchase.

I purchased this because it packs small but later realized that at 2.25 oz it weighs more than twice my previous cup. I doubt I will be lugging this on the trail. It will make a good cup for canoe trips but so would any free cup. Costs too much for what it does.

This cup was so compact and light for my last backpacking trip and was fine for hot liquids. However it attracted hair like non other! We hike with a dog, and that cup was a dog hair (and my hair) magnet! could not keep the thing clean to save my life :)

This mug is great in hotels for making coffee/tea or even things like soup or instant noodles. It's also convenient for picnics and take-out food while on the go. The rigid rim makes it easier drink from than the squishy body would suggest.

I'ved used this cup for a couple years now, mainly for hot drinks like tea and coffee, and sometimes ramen. I've not had issues with the heat transfer or odors and tastes as others have reported, but I clean mine out immediately after use.

I love this thing. I use it as a mug and a bowl on the trail. It's easy to clean and the food doesn't stick to the silicone like it does to the inside of my titanium mug. I like that it lets heat through, but doesn't burn my hand.

I purchased this to make a small cook kit. This piece is the lid that snaps on tight to an Olicamp hard-anodized space saver mug. The lids snaps on tight and securely to hold the alcohol stove, fuel bottle, and lighter inside.

I got this and the x bowl for my four legged hiking partner. he never liked the fabric dog bowls so I gave this and the bowl a shot and he likes it much better. I don't see durability being an issue it seems really well made.

I bought this cup to go backpacking with once and ended up not using it again. The food we had that night left a stain and smell that I can not get out! ON the bright side, it collapses down and is very easy to carry.

Folds down to nothing, weighs nothing. Measurements can be hard to see at times, and folding spots take a wee bit more effort to clean over a regular cup. But that is the only minor drawbacks. I love it!

This is my second one of these and I love them. Pack down flat and perfect for all drinks. If I'm going to have anything slightly negative to say is it doesn't have a lid to keep drinks cold or warm.

It is a good mug. Good thermal isolation. There are scales for measuring liquid quantity in cups and CC, which is nice of course. However it is very difficult to read it when the light is not strong.

This packs down small and works out well. It handles hot water well and insulates fine It is definitely true though that it retains the flavor of whatever you put in it. Luckily I'm a tea drinker.

This is the most versitle item in my backpack. Great for coffee, tea, juice, and doubles as a small bowl as well. It weighs next to nothing and takes up zero space in my pack.

Used it for both a bowl and a mug. Worked great, no smell and cleans easily. Having the firm rim at the top of the cup is a great feature as well as it being packable.

These little guys are great. Super compact, light weight, and withstand high heat; you can use them to eat with, drink with, and measure. All around useful to have.

I wanted a light compact coffee-oatmeal mug for my first bike camping trip in 40 years. There was no plastic taste and no burnt lips or hands when hding hot coffee.

A good size-- fits around bottom of Jetboil in place of cup/cover, but is better size for drinking/eating. Also fits in bottom of OR(but not EMS) NAlgene carrier.

This product packs small, is lightweight, and works well for hot beverages like coffee. The material allows for easy washing and seems suprisingly durable.

I loved the limited space needed to travel with this collapsable mug. Was sturdy and comfortable to handle with a hot beverage.

The cup is great. I love how it folds flat. and has a measuring cup built in. My dog love using it as well. (he has his own)

I travel frequently for my job. This is a great mug to taking along. Easy to pack holds liquids easy to clean a winner

Very light, durable and stable! I like that it works as a measuring cup as well. Love being able to collapse it down.

Cup folds flat to pack in my small bike bag. Cup has high capacity. Attractive color. Highly functional. Good price.

Bought this for hydrating my pooch during/after a hike. Fits well into my High Sierra Solo lumbar pack.

Got this for my dog for long car trips. Packs away small and its made from silicon so it's safe.

After several uses, it becomes unusable due to the taste of previous ingredients.

Loved that it was heat resistant and folded up perfectly without an issue.

This collapsable mug is perfect for both measuring and for drinking.

Great space saver marking on the inside of cup are hard to see

Great product. Lightweight and fits inside other x series.

I've been on a quest for several years to replace my old green GSR plastic mug. I've had the thing for 10+ years and have found nothing on the market that was worth spending the money on that would end up weighing practically the same or offer any advantages.

I picked this up because I also have the bowl. I carry them in my backpack to work and the university along with a can of soup, beans, or whatever else I might pack for my meals. If you let water sit in the cup for about 10 minutes it will start to taste like plastic, not terrible but noticeable. I have a regular water bottle so I typically drink other liquids - tea, coffee, juice, etc. - in the cup so it works fine. I've cooked peas, instant oatmeal, and cereal in it as well. Very easy to clean. I also use the cup to fill up my water bottle if it can not fit under the spout of the fountain or the sink. It is lightweight and collapsable, fitting neatly inside the bowl. I saw that if I had bought the bowl and cup together it comes in a nice zipper carry case but it works fine without in my backpack because I keep it in a flat front zipper pocket without much space to shift around. The silicon is firm enough that it will stand by itself with any worries of tipping over or collapsing. I've used it (and the bowl) in the microwave without any i'll effects. The post below, by Packrafter, has some very cool videos about baking with the cup and I think I will be giving those a try pretty soon. Overall I get a lot of use out of the cup and am happy with my purchase. Although I mostly use it at work and school, I have brought it out on some camping trips for my friend to use because he did not have his own mess kit and it worked perfectly.

I wrote a review which is posted on the GSI Coffee Filter (Java Drip), which addresses the matter of odor rentention, and how to solve "it"
