Osprey - Poco AG Child Carrier

Category: Backpack

We love this carrier. We tried out a few in the store and we loved this one. I was intimidated by carriers in general as I thought they were complicated, but this one is very user friendly and I love that the sun shade is attached, with other brands, it’s a separate thing. We use it often and are very happy with our purchase. It will be great for vacations, festivals, pretty much anywhere you want to go as a family.

Love this pack, I'm 5'4 and this pack certainly doesn't drag me down or feel heavy at all. My 1 year old is quite tall and weighs in at 27lbs, he fits comfortably into the seat area with room to grow, and loves to swing his feet in the stirrups. I looked at a bunch of packs before buying the AG (they had already recalled the other poco models) but I settled on Osprey thanks to it being built like a tank. It's extremely sturdy, and the arms that wrap around the side to keep your little in are very rigid. The inside seat is contoured and adjustable, also love that it clips at the chest and not the groin like other brands. Tons of space inside the zippered compartment, and I adore the easily deployed sunshade that's included. The shade does have mesh sides which I thought at first I didn't like... but, they provide more sun coverage and keep bugs away. All in all a great pack, would've loved the poco plus or premium and I'm hoping they rerelease them after fixing the seat issue.

We have 9 mos old twins, so we needed two child carriers. After some nominal online research (let's face it, there's not much free time with twins), we settled on the Osprey and the Deuter. We ended up with one of each and here is why: I am a 5'4" female with a small frame. I just couldn't get the Osprey to adjust to my torso length. It supposedly adjusts from large all the way down to x-small, but somehow I couldn't get the thing to actually stay on the the x-small setting, it kept slipping to small. And that's not small enough for me. So even just the 15 min I was wearing it in the store I could tell that my lower back was not going to let me go on a hike with this thing: since the backpack didn't adjust small enough, the top of the pack "hung back" too far and my lower back had to compensate for that. And coincidentally, the mesh back of the Osprey, while beautifully "aery," has no lumbar support at all, it's just a straight mesh back from top to bottom. I like the Osprey for its simple harness, large pockets, and included sunshade. The whole pack is very intuitive and I feel like twin 1 is very secure in it. My husband, who is 5'11", chose this pack b/c it's so easy to load the baby and it fits him very well. For the price, it's probably the best "bang for your buck" if you can make it conform to your body. I chose the Deuter for myself b/c it had the lumbar support I needed and is nicely padded. It allowed for better adjustment for my frame size and the extra padding in the lumbar region meant that as my lower back compensated for the backwards pull of the backpack, my back was supported. The compartments are as spacious as the Osprey, and unlike the Osprey the Deuter has a zippered pocket on the waist belt large enough for my phone. The harness is secure but I feel like the Osprey's might be more so. It is also more cumbersome than the Osprey b/c you have to go "digging" for the buckles somewhere down between the carrier and the front of the baby. The side entry is nice and maybe once twin 2 is older and able to follow some simple commands like "Hold still for a sec!" it might be easier to buckle him in. Or not b/c he'll also be larger. Twin 2 is rather small and only 1 pound over the lower weight limit, which might be why the shoulder harness doesn't feel as secure; his shoulders are simply too narrow. So I moved the chest clip to his back to hold the shoulder pads closer together and this works like a charm. I could also just have swapped babies and put the larger twin in the Deuter, but I relegated the 3 lbs heavier twin to my husband and his Osprey. The sunshade is an accessory that costs another $25 or so, which is another thing to consider with this pack. It fits nicely for stowing in the lower pocket of the pack once folded and doesn't take up too much extra room, assembles as quickly as the Osprey's, and provides plenty of shade. It has a small rain cover as well that folds out separately which the Osprey doesn't have. The latter only has a mesh side that is part of the sunshade every time it's deployed, so your child is always looking through a mosquito net of sorts. At the end of the day, my husband and I took the boys out for multiple hours of hiking and scrambling over boulders and both babies were secure and comfortable. And both babies loved it in their respective packs. Bottom line: the pack that fits you best is the best one for you. It doesn't matter how easy it is to use, what extra gimmicks and accessories it has, and how "secure" you feel your child is. If the pack is so uncomfortable that you dread putting it on your back, are in pain the entire time you are out trying to enjoy the hike, and can't move for 3 days after your trip, the pack's not worth it.

I would say 3.8 stars, because the straps and the waist belt need to be more padded. If you like to hike more then 5 miles you might want to look for a carrier with better padding or like I’ve done is add padding. When your child is only 20 pounds it’s not so bad but once they get toddler age and they still need to be carried it takes a toll. It is easy to get my daughter in and out of the carrier which is cool. The pockets and extra large pocket at the bottom is good. I wish it weighed a little less but it’s kinda hard to take weight off because it is framed. I’ve had this pack for almost two years and it has held up great. We have gone on many hikes!

I love the pack, the materials, its construction, the integrated sun shade, the availability of storing a water bladder and the storage compartments. I don't like the hip belt, not very supportive. I need to chinch it really tight and at that points it hurts badly. I don't like the side pockets. The mesh is really hard and you can't fit much in there.

I loved this pack but could never get it to fit me right. Thinking that it was user error, I watched the videos and eventually made the hour trek to REI. The gentleman there was great, showing me all the ways to tweak the fit. Still could not get this to fit me. He even measured me with the osprey measuring guide which said I was 16”. Every time I tightened the straps down, it lifted the load straps about 1.5-2” off my shoulders and made the pack unstable feeling. I really wish Osprey would make a woman specific child carrier or change the load lifter buckle position so the petite could enjoy!

Little munchkin fits great in this carrier and we use it quite often. Construction durability seems to be standard Osprey: 10 of 10. Super easy to adjust the seat height as she grows taller, the sun shade is fantastic and the stirrups seem to be a neat addition. Haven't had the need to jam the pockets full of snacks for a long day hike, as the little one can stand about 1 hour hikes at max right now. That being said, there seems to be ample room...maybe 2 nalgene's in depth/size. I'd recommend this.

Weather's been a bit dicey around here lately so I haven't been able to bring it on a hike but I already love this thing. Just like all babies, my kid demands a lot of attention and entertainment. Rather than stick him in front of a TV I strap this thing on and bring him around the house while I work.

This was a gift for father's day from my wife, I had been looking for something similar for a while. My wife surprised me with this one. I'm a big guy and except for the "form fitting" belt (which is the reason it's not 5 stars) it fits great and is adjustable to meet my needs. Ever since that first ride around the store, my kid loves to ride on Dad's back whenever and wherever. The leg holes are a bit awkward if the child has shoes on, but it's a minor inconvenience. The next model up has more storage, but this has plenty for short to moderate hikes. plus there's lots of spots to clip on more.

I'm 5'9" male, fit, and found the hip belt on the Poco AG to be very uncomfortable. It's very stiff and does not articulate. The Plus model was the same. Didn't matter if I put it over my iliac crest or above my iliac crest. Also, despite the shoulder straps to pull the bag closer to my back, it still felt like the bag wanted to tip back. My gut feeling is this bag fits well for beefy guys over 6' tall but poorly for the smaller people, hence the discrepancy in the reviews.

I purchased this carrier for use with my 2yo, who has some challenges and can't do long walks with the family. I thought this would be a great way to finally say goodbye to the big, clunky outdoor stroller, and help my 2yo feel more a part of family activities. Man, was I wrong! Although this carrier can hold a child up to 40-something pounds, it can't actually fit a larger child. My 2yo is really the size of an 18 or 20 month old, and he was already too big to fit in this carrier. Getting him seated in it was actually the easy part, and the foot rests are adjustable so that was fine as well. But the child harness is really designed for a MUCH smaller kid. He was uncomfortable the second I got his arms into it, and it wasn't even possible to buckle the harness closed. I just couldn't get the straps to reach around his body. The harness is also not adjustable, so I had no hope of making it work. We gave it a quick go (maybe about 10 minutes) with him sitting in the child seat and just not buckled in. It was actually surprisingly comfortable to wear, but it just didn't make sense to keep if he can't be secured in the seat. So back to the store it goes!

We've had a variety of child carriers and it's always been a struggle to make the kids happy. This is the first backpack we've owned that our son actually got mad at us unless he was in it! It is comfortable and secure, SO easy to hike with. I was really hesitant to spend this much money. It it has been worth every penny. Our favorite features: the baby chest strap, the storage underneath, the pop out rain fly/sun shade, and all the torso adjustability.

I put my 8 month old in here in the store and walked around for about half an hour before purchasing it. Since then have taken it on two hikes and it works great. I compared it to the Deuter Kid Comfort and thought the construction was better. The integrated sun shade is nice too since that is an add-on with other packs. My son loved our first few hikes; he is up high and can see everything and naps as well.

Purchased to pack our Granddaughter and it is an excellent tool. I say that because it fits everyone. The ease to adjust the torso fit is perfect. So if someone gets tired it is easy to switch to another. The ease to strap our Grand Daughter is also simple. We feel very secure when she is up high and can see around. Also very easy for us to see how she is doing on our walks/hikes.

Bought this in spring 2017 for my young daughter. I have used it many times throughout the summer/fall hiking and camping. Very comfortable to wear for long periods. My daughter is comfortable and takes nice cozy naps in this.

Comfortable to wear, supports child well and the kickstand on the bottom makes it easy to set on the ground and get the child all set up. Hiked a very steep trail in the Elwah River Valley with my kid (2 yrs) asleep in the pack, he was secure and the pack stayed in place on my back well also. Great pockets to hold diapers, wipes etc.

Absolutely love this product! I have a 24 pound 18 month old and she loves it too! Super comfortable for both of us. I picked this over a different brand because of the breathable mesh on the sides so my daughter doesn't get too hot. Definitely recommend!!

We looked at child carriers in the store. This fit our child well and felt comfortable walking around. Other child carriers were more difficult to secure our child in and even pinched her when we tried to tighten it to keep her from falling out. This pack is more rigid for the child carrier portion and has sturdy side arms around the saddle to keep her in place without having to make anything too tight directly on her, and we don't have to worry she'll slip out. It also comes with a shade canopy instead of having to buy it separately. It is very easy to adjust both the shoulder straps for the adult and the saddle area for the child for a perfect fit. The shoulder straps do rub my neck/collar bone while hiking some, but it isn't uncomfortable enough to have to stop. The side mesh on the shade canopy is fairly thick, so it helps a lot with shade, but it also makes it more difficult for the child to see out. We ended up purchasing online for the color we wanted. Overall we are happy with the purchase and would recommend it to others.

I bought this backpack about a month ago and I am very pleased with the fit and finish. The quality is great and it is surprisingly lightweight. I especially like the retractable hood it comes with. Great for hiking with a little one.

Bought this pack to hike with my daughter. She loved it the first time we put her in it. She enjoys being up high and looking around. I love that the sun shade is built in and the pack is super comfy and has the storage that we need.

I love this carrier. We used it for our son up till he was 10 months old and it worked like a dream - its so comfy to carry him and he is pretty heavy. It stands well, has great storage, and seems to be comfy for the child.

Perfectly engineered. Hiked several times infants weighing 25 and 30 lbs. Weight was well distributed and both children loved it. Features like the flexible mesh sides and stirrups ensures they were comfortable.

Bought to be able to take our baby along with us and it worked flawlessly. Adjustable to fit our 6 month old and will fit a very long time.

Works great as I am 6’4” and my wife is 5’3” can change in seconds to fit either one of us. Very comfortable too and kiddo loves it

We are so happy with this hiking backpack! Our 8 month old daughter loves it. She smiles the whole time she’s in it on our hikes.

My daughter uses carrier daily with her six-month old son. The baby likes traveling in it and it is comfortable for my daughter.

Overall, it does the job great. I have a few nit picks: (1) the storage is limited; (2) I wish there were more color options

Besides Ospreys Quality, the built in stowable rain, sun shade, is just well designed.

Carried two grandkids numerous times. Safe, easy to use, comfortable.

We visited an REI store to compare this pack with another popular model from another manufacturer before deciding which to purchase. Our 1.5 year old was happy as could be in this pack, but couldn't get out of the other one fast enough. This made our decision an easy one. She now gets excited and starts shouting "pack! pack!" whenever she sees it. Her excitement isn't too surprising given how comfortable and well-designed the child compartment of the pack seems to be as compared to competing packs we looked at.

Is this pack compatible with Camel Bak bladders, or does it require an Osprey branded bladder?

Yes, I have a 70oz camelbak reservoir installed in the frame area, and I remove it for refilling. I'm sure a 100oz, or any other brand reservoir would fit too. You just have to work it in there by flattening the reservoir a bit.

Is this carrier manufactured after Fall 2016 with the additional hipbelt comfort?

As of March 2017, we are carrying the latest version of the pack.

Having researched baby carriers I see there was a product recall from Osprey on their Poco AGs earlier in 2016. Are you selling backpacks supplied before or after the recall? Thanks a lot

The Poco AG Child Carrier we are currently selling was inspected and has been cleared for sale since the recall.
