Altra - Lone Peak 3.5 Trail-Running Shoes - Women's

Category: Women's Running Shoes

Let me first say that these are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned. I was so impressed when I bought them. I felt like I was walking on fluffy pillows. However, after three weeks of owning these shoes and running probably less than 30 miles in them, the rubber flap (not sure of technical term) at the front of the toe has begun to come unattached on both shoes. In addition, some of the fabric on the sides of the shoes is ripping. Lastly, the tread on the bottom of the shoes is almost completely worn off. It sucks. I’m planning to return these shoes as soon as I have time to get our to REI

The left one is perfect, good fit, so comfortable, but not three days after I bought them (in early October), the heel cushion in the right one became detached, bunched up, and now there's a bump that makes for an awkward fit. This isn't an issue I've had with any other shoe and I find it really strange, and I haven't had any luck fixing it. If this had happened a day earlier I would've returned them, unfortunately I went back home to Peru so I'm left with brand new unusable shoes :/

This is my 5th pair of Altras and I love them. But try them on! The sizing seems to be all over the place - I'm a solid 10 in most shoes but in these I'm a 9.5 and even 9 might fit. In the Superior 2s, I had both 10 and 10.5 and both worked. I assume the wide toe box makes different sizes fit different feet, so you should try multiple sizes! Yeah, they're not the most durable but the tradeoff for me is I don't have any blister/comfort issues (even when the heel padding inevitably shreds) and I often use them off trail; I only buy them on clearance or lightly used anyway. Despite the complaints, Altras are still my only hiking shoe!

I was looking for a shoe with a wide toe base that I could transition into from a flat orthopedic post surgical shoe. At the time of the purchase I was 2 months post op metatarsal bone graft surgery. Unfortunately, my normally comfortable Hoka One One shoes irritated my stitches on the top of my foot and made my toes feel a bit cramped. The REI clerk suggested a neutral heel shoe to relieve the tightness in the toe box. After I purchased my regular size, I read on the Altra website that they recommended people get a half size larger. It definitely made it more comfortable. It's just been a couple weeks, but I'm thrilled for now. My physical therapist said that when the foot is further along in the healing process I may need to use orthotics to lessen the load on the big toe. For now, I couldn't be happier with a neutral shoe.

I would never have tried these on if it weren't for the REI rep's recommendation. Alas, I couldn't take them off. Like walking on a mushroom. Despite how unattractive they are, these Altra Lone Peak's are incredibly wearable on trails. The toe box is roomy and the heel is sufficiently snug and the zero gravity provides a sure stride. They sometimes get to feeling tight around my ankle after a few hours, but other than that... and the frankensteinish look and clown color, they're my go-to for day hikes now.

I have rather wide feet, and I've never, ever found a running shoe before now that actually was comfortable to run in without cramming my toes together. Now that I've tried these, I can't believe the narrow toe box is the norm. These shoes are SO GOOD. I've worn them on a treadmill, on the road, and (mainly) on the trail, and they have great grip, move well and best of all: my feet don't hurt when I take them off. I've grown used to pain under my big toe after every single run, and it hasn't happened once in these shoes. I can't recommend them enough!

I'm not sure what all the hype is about regarding the zero drop design, particularily in the Lone Peak style of Altra trail runners. Maybe it's because I have mid-high arches, and everything feels flat and too much side to side movement in shoes. They are bulky, feel awkwardly heavy (like picking up gum from the bottom of the shoe after each step). Although I must note, the wide "natural" toebox is heavenly. The gaiter trap is a must, and great addition. I think this style is best suited for flat or normal arches. Size up half size in the 3.5, but not the 4.0.

Finally a shoe that doesn't bruise the heck out of my crooked dancers' toes! I did have to add an arch insert and these definitely take getting used to when you first wear them (they pulled the back of my calves a bit since I'm not used to zero drop and I had some lower leg pain at first), but they seem durable and dry quickly. Testing them out for a longer hike on the CDT soon!

I have short wide feet and every boot has mangled my poor toes. These felt like heaven from the moment I put them on. Why the 4 stars you ask? I took these babies out for a 8 mile hike. I could have gone longer in these shoes. I did get small blisters on the back of my heel. I will try again and add another pair of blister shoes into the mix.

Wore on a 25 miles hike. No blisters no sore feet :) I have a stress fracture in my foot and didn’t hurt while wearing these shoes on my hike. Great shoes!

Broke down after my first backpacking trip and first ware. Pretty disappointing seeing as it was only 6mi out and back. Inner sole cushion came completely off

I had concern buying flat trail shoes after wearing running shoes for so many years, but had developed heel pain and the salesman assured me this would help. I have had surgery on both feet for arthritis, and need a wide toe box. These are great. I wear them 6 days a week on the trails around my house and my feet no longer hurt.

I bought these about a month ago -- they are really comfortable. Like walking on a cloud. I started out with lower mileage - 3 - 5 miles and quickly got awful calf & Achilles pain. I started to read online that this is common when you switch to a zero drop shoe.

The toebox is a lot smaller this year compared to last year's toebox. Depending on what your doing at least size up a half size. If you are doing long distance hiking on varied terrain size up a hole size. If you have a normal/average arch add an insole.

These seem to be a pretty great quality shoe. I've run several short distances in them (4-10 miles) and they didn't need to be "broken in" for this length of a run. However, I just ran with them on steep technical last night and I rolled my ankles about 8-10 times total between the left and right ankle. I am a little more prone to ankle rolling due to past injuries, but usually only my left, previously injured ankle rolls and this time it happened with both. I'm not a fan of the cushioning on these, because I find personally the more cushioning, the less playful the shoe on technical trail. These have been pretty good for smooth trail, and are very comfortable. I also didn't find the toe box to be huge, which was a relief. The toe box is definitely more roomy than your average shoe, but nothing too crazy. I'm going to switch to something that isn't quite as high and cushiony.

I wanted so badly for this shoe to be my favorite hiking shoe, but it was not. I tried on and was encouraged to get a half size up from my normal shoe size. It felt fine when I tried it on in the store but when I went out on the trail it felt big and my foot was constantly moving around, felt slippery almost. I was wearing my usually med weight wool hiking sock, but it made no difference. I too them back and will hold off on trying the shoe again but in my normal shoe size. The 'zero drop' did not bother me since I wear a shoe with a similar foot bed.

Shoes had wonderful, soft cushioned insole. It did not give me enough support and I felt my foot was sliding around inside the shoe.

All my other shoes have been replaced by these comfortable, nice looking shoes. I can hike for days with no issues

Sadly Altra is just another shoe company. They cannot claim to have a wide footbed any longer. I walked 2000km in Lone Peak 2.5 and didn’t get any blisters. With these Lone Peaks I got a blister just walking around a city day four of my journey. Yes they still have the zero drop which is great and these were good cushioning but the width is not there. If you have regular width feet these could be for you. I found them to be a little hot though.

I wanted to love these so much. I have wide feet and oddly these were too narrow and squeezed me through the midfoot but somehow were also too loose - enough to give me blisters on my pinky toes from my toes sliding around the foot box. I wear a New Balance wide with no problem but these were too narrow. Just a weird fit all around on my foot. I normally wear a 8.5 but had to size up a whole size to get these to fit - and still. I guess I have a weird shaped foot? So strange. Won't be wearing Altras again.

Wore these shoes on the Four Pass Loop in Colorado. They were awesome, however upon hiking over rocks they didn’t provide a lot of cushion. They fit a little wide, but I just wore thick socks. I would defiantly purchase again.

Gearing up for a hike through the Smoky Mountains, I tried these on in store also using the rock to climb/test tread. I loved the cushion in the sole. In all honestly, it's the most comfortable zero drop shoe I've worn, so long as I'm standing still or walking a flat surface. The problem was my feet slid around forward and backward so badly as I tested out the incline/descend on the rock. I honestly wonder why so many thru hikers are still using these. Don't want to take any chances of hating these when I'm 12-20 miles away from my trailhead. Since I wore my Superior 3.5 pair in to shop, I tested those out on the rock and all was fine. But since I don't want to take the Superiors up Mount Le Conte or to Ramsay's Cascades, I ended up going home with a different brand and likely more durable shoe. Sorry Altra.

I love the Lone Peak 3.0 and expected the same with the 3.5s. the 3.5s are narrower at the top of the foot. I wear a size 8 and it was a tight fit, so I tried a half size larger, clunky at the toe and arch in the wrong spot. Just didn't work for me

The second time that I wore these was unexpectedly a hike that has 5-7 inches of snow in the mountain. The treading of the sole did not disappoint and even with the slushy part of the trail, it held me up really good! Reliable on slick rocks than other brands and despite of being somehow immersed in the snow to clear out the pathway for other hikers, it kept my feet warm (I was also wearing sock liners aside from wool socks) and only a bit damp.

I listened to the reviews and bought a half size larger, don’t do it. Buy your normal size. I can see going a half size up if you have super wide feet but I don’t and there’s extra room in the toe box.

I'd been fighting tendonitis for about six months when I bought the Altra Lone Peak shoe. The problem has not appeared since. The shoe securely holds my narrower heel, while allowing my forefoot the space it wants without putting pressure on the tendon. The cushion adds softness to the ride without feeling squishy.

I have purchased 10 pairs of trail runners trhis year and finally found one I lov! Thanks

I have a pair of Timp Trail Altra shoes and they are amazing and fit perfect in a 7.5. I got these and they were huge. My foot was floating in them and my custom orthotics won’t even fit in them which was a big disappointment. I still think they are great shoes but for me they won’t work since they run so big and I absolutely have to wear the orthotics or I experience a lot of pain.

I love these shoes. Just wish they came in something other than pink.

So far I have only done a few short distance trail runs in them....love how they feel and the fit is perfect! I got a half size larger based on a friend's recommendation and they are just the right length. Width is awesome for my fat little hobbit feet! Will wear them on a long run or two to see how they feel and then will probably order a second pair!

I bought these shoes to replace Merrell hikers. The zero drop concept was completely new to me but I took a leap and bought them. They are extremely comfortable. Very cushy inside and have good traction on the trail. I didn't realize they ran about 1/2 size small compared to Merrells. I have since read the reviews and this seems to be a common statement from others. Because they ran a little small, my toes hit the front of the shoe the entire way down the trail. So, I returned them and bought the 3.0 Trail-running shoes by Altra instead in a 1/2 size larger than these. I haven't tried the new ones out yet. I would recommend these shoes with the caviat to go up 1/2 size when you purchase them. Also, the fixed tongue on the shoe makes it more difficult to put the shoe on when wearing traditional hiking socks.

I bought these to change from a traditional hiking boot to something lighter. They are amazing. Super Cush. Slimmer heel allows for snug fit and no slipping. The toe box is super roomy and breathable. I’ve been breaking them in and took them on back to back 20+ mile hikes. No hot spots and feet feel great. Love them would recommend

Used them straight away and they felt great. No problems

Very comfortable - went with a 1/2 size smaller than my regular running shoes; as the toe box is very wide. Got to use these on a really tough trail run. The course was muddy, hilly and rocky and these shoes held-up really well. Only complaint are the short laces.

These shoes are incredibly comfortable! After wearing them a few times I noticed that the padding at the back of the heal is sliding down. That little pad is so far down now that a hard edge rubs the back of my ankle right at the top of the shoe. It's really annoying, and I have to remember to put band aids on my ankles every time I wear the shoes or they rub my ankles raw. I have never had a pair of trail runners start to fall apart so quickly. It's disappointing, because I love them otherwise.

I have very wide feet and never realized how uncomfortable all my other shoes were until I got these Altras. I am on my feet a lot and to not have them all squished and confined at the end of a long hike/run has been a revelation in comfort.

Great fit for my feet; I love the wide toe box and narrow/standard heel. I have narrow feet, but having all this extra room in the toe box is amazing. I do have to tighten the laces for downhill hiking so my foot stays in place. It is nice to find a zero drop shoe that still has substantial cushioning. Color is quite bright (I wish they made the Men's and Women's in the same colors). I was hiking in tennis shoes before this, so these are a major upgrade in traction without adding a lot of weight.

Purchased my first pair of these while on the Colorado Trail for a lighter shoe for long distance backpacking. Love the wide toe box and how breathable they are. Updated stitching on toe area makes mesh more durable.

Absolutely love these shoes. Not only do I wear them to hike but, I've been wearing them to do daily things. Extremely comfortable and the toe spread makes a world of difference while climbing rocks etc.

This shoe fit perfect. Great traction. No problems breaking them in. Fits like a glove. Roomy in toe area

I love this snickers to hiking. I recommend to long hikers and also for runners. Its dries very easy.

I have wide feet and always have to go bigger with my shoes. These are so comfy and fit great!

Sadly, I am disappointed in these shoes. I thought the wide toe box would be nice. Instead, it just allows my feet to slide around way too much. My last hike came close to leaving me with purple toenails!

I gotta say that I have never been so pleased with a shoe before. I told the floor guide that I had broken my toe and that the rocks on my walking trail were hiring my toe. He went right to these pair, and well, what a difference. I haven't stopped walking since. Love the shoe and REI for giving us the opportunity to find what works best. Too bad it wasn't BOGO, I am wearing them out way too fast :)

I needed a new pair of shoes to hike and occasionally trail run in, and I already have some Altra Escalantes which I love, so I was eager to try these. They're great! I have narrow, low-volume feet which makes the toe-box roomier than average, but the heel snugs in enough that the fit is secure. Comfortable right out of the box--very excited to hike far in these.

Best hiking/trail running shoes I've bought! I definitely would buy these shoes again!

They felt great to run in, but after about 3 short runs I got a pain on the inner side of my left ankle, I never have problems with that foot so I knew it had to be the shoes. Theres is no real support, if thats what you're going for you will love them. Huge toe box, and I could run fast but that pain, have to return.

At first I thought it was an issue with the lacing but after undoing those I realized the tongue was sewn too tight and the middle of the shoe was cutting in to the top of my foot. Other than that these were super comfy on my foot ... I just don't want to undo shoe stitching to get a great fit.

At first not having the heel lift made running harder cause I am used to getting the push from the elevated heel. I think these shoes are super comfortable. I wear them everyday on walks and runs. The color is bright but fun too. I might get some glow in the dark shoelaces.

Love the toe box - plenty of room. Decent tread. Only wish I didn't have to lace so tight to get my toes to not hit the front of the shoe. Otherwise I love them so far.

These shoes have great cushion but their best attribute in my book is the spacious toe box. I've been wearing my Iniji toe socks with them and am loving it.

I bought for my wife as I have the men’s style in blue.Great for walking and hiking , practically no break-in period . It does change your gait a bit.

I love the huge toe box on Altra runners. Also the zero drop really works for me. Altra are now my go-to brand for runners!

These are even better, no more foot fatigue, more fitted on heel yet plenty of toe room, perfect for wide feet.

For everyday walks or on the trail, it is very comfortable! Plenty of “toe” room!

Are these shoes good for over pronation? I am looking for a trail shoe that is good for over pronating. I am also an avid obstacle racer that is need of a good shoe.

These are neutral shoes, designed for mild pronators and neutral runners.
