Salomon - Speedcross 4 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's

Category: Men's Running Shoes

I bought these shoes for a Spartan race in Lake Tahoe. I put them through a ton of mud and rocky hiking. They were extremely comfortable and durable. After I washed them at home (in the washer), they looked brand new and the tread didn't have any tears. Overall, an outstanding shoe!

Honestly, these are awesome shoes, love the easy lacings and have really good traction for trail running. My only issue is, and I’m still testing this more but, they seem to rub a lot against my feet when I’m running long distances (which is what these shoes are suppose to me made for) creating blisters. I’ve worn a mixture of different socks with them to see if that’s the problem and I don’t have any more theories....I’m about out of ideas. I don’t know if it could be the “narrow” problem that some of the other reviews mention, BUT I REALLY DO WANT TO LIKE THESE SHOES! I was really close to rating these 4 stars, but my feet are very sad. sorry.

Im a Spartan Race Racer and every year I do more and more races. I honestly dont know how I did all my races before with the weak and terrible Rebook and other brand sneakers.

This is simply for wide foot peoples attention. I love running in Topos or Altras all day long but these wide boys are amazing. I've only had them a few days but I feel them stretching out already and they feel great. I know these are a different breed than the others I mentioned due to the sole not being as thick but the lugs are the ticket. These are perfect for Georgia terrain. I'll def report back after a few months. The only kicker is that the "WIDE" have sold out all over. I hope they extend this "WIDE" feature to the Speed Cross 5. I dig there colors too...

I bought these shoes a couple weeks ago because I needed a hiking shoe with a low profile to fit in a hang gliding harness, but still comfortable enough to hike. The shoe fits in the harness and it is very comfortable and light weight, but it gets hot. I'm guessing that is because the material doesn't breath well. I only wear the shoe when I fly because its unbearable in the South-West desert heat. I'll have to get a different pair for everyday hiking.

Loved the fit of this shoe but quality is very poor. My first pair after just 150 mile of easy training hiking the fabric ripped. Many thanks to REI for taking them back. I am now thru hiking the AT. Between 60 and 80 miles, the toe cap became unglued. Now at 150 miles, the fabric is ripping. Totally unacceptable manufacturing quality from a company like Soloman. Hopefully the shoes will last till I can get to a outdoor store (Hot Springs in 110 miles else I'm toast).

These are great OCR shoes, possibly a tad heavy when wet and not the best drainage, but the grip is the best I have seen on any trail shoe. The high drop makes it a bit easy to roll your ankle so watch out. I had been using Altra's so this was a big change but I do really like them. The narrower toe box is not as uncomfortable as you would think. Probably a good 8-10 mile max on these. I can't see running 15plus in them.

I am disappointed with the revamp of this shoe. I've had a couple pairs of its predecessor, Speedcross 3. With that shoe I took a size 11 (US) but with the Speedcross 4 they were too tight and I had to go to an 11.5. However, they aren't nearly as comfortable. Arch support is lacking overall fit is subpar to 3. I've also noticed the treads squeak when walking over hard surfaces (concrete, tile, etc.) I believe they've missed the mark with this design update! I will be finding a new brand of shoe.

My feet are borderline wide but the wide version of this shoe didnt feel as good. The fit is a bit snug in the toe box area but not painfully so. My only complaint is that the tongue of the shoe is too long and bulky. It rubs against my ankles. I've havent taken these shoes on a long trail run so I dont know if its going to cause any chafing or discomfort. Overall, these shoes feel very comfortable and snug. I got them mainly because they felt like my preferred road running shoe, the ASICS Gel Cumulus with a similar heel-toe drop.

I am extremely hard on my trail running shoes and spend a lot of time running the rocky desert trails of the south west. I have gone through more brands than I care to admit, and had break downs on every single one of them. That is until I came across my first pair of Speedcross 3's. So now I own two pairs of the Speedcross 3 and two pair of the Speedcross 4. I not only do trail running, but I am an advid OCR racer with over 60 races under my belt. These shoes absolutely fit my racing needs from their incredible grip to the knowledge that once I am at the start line, I do not have to worry about my shoes coming untied until I cross the finish line. My older pairs might not give me the support for the demands of running, but still are supportive enough for moderate hiking. The fit is incredible, and for me they are true to size. I strongly recommend that you take a chance on these beauties and see if you do not become hooked.

Thought these would be the perfect shoes I was looking for. Many reviewers complain they are too narrow and while they appear that way they fit fine on my feet. The tread is tremendous but I can see it wearing down easily on hard surfaces. Suprisingly I did find myself slipping on some soft terrain and once in damp grass. I am very disappointed because the second time I wore them the lacing system broken. Not the laces themselves but the lace holder loop. The thread on one of the loops that hold the laces simply came unraveled. I was amazed they failed so quickly. I am not sure when it happened but I did trip once when running so perhaps that is what caused them to break. I would hope they are more durable than that. Perhaps I purchased a faulty pair, not sure. Taking them back to REI tomorrow and undecided if I want to give them another chance. I am really disappointed in these shoes. My other Salomons look new after many hikes.

I purchased these for myself and the women’s version for my wife for a weekend trip to Zion. I was impressed with the way the shoe gripped the terrain on our way to Angel’s Landing. This shoe didn’t slip one bit and actually gave us the confidence to push through even on slanting terrain portions of the hike. A must for all!!!

I bought these shoes and within 4 times on the trail both had holes in the sides, the bottom of the shoe was beginning to peal off, and the treads were getting worn down substantially. Typically I would expect this after a month or so, but this occurred after running only 4 times. The soles are so thin that all rocks are felt. I've had these for two weeks and am buying new shoes already.

I used these for a Tough Mudder. Comfortable, shed mud and water really well. My feet never felt wet or dlid on the foot bed. After 12 miles my feet felt great and no blisters!

This is my first pair of trail shoes, I am very happy with the purchase as I am new to this type exercise and plan to continue for a very long time.

I started with a black pair about a year ago. These are my main trail shoes. I have hundreds of miles on them (I walk, I’m not a runner). Liked them so much I bought a gray pair. When they went on sale I bought the green pair. Never bought three pairs of the same shoe before!

Tall female, I wear these even if they are "Men's". For long hikes I need the toe room. These are my favorite hikers! Fit to the arch of my foot with the one pull Salomon lace system, no crease over the MTP joint, as the fabric is so well molded. Right out of the box I can wear them for hours. I like Darn Tough socks in them. The Speedcross 4's run small and narrow so I sized up and up. I also have worn this out in the GTX. Excellent support, traction, and fit. Love!

Owned Speedcross 3 for 1y +. Done everything from hiking to running and caving with them. No blisters. Great grip.

These shoes worked great for me! I mail ordered these shoes and tried them out with no break-in on an 8.8 mile roundtrip difficult hike with 3,500' vertical elevation. I also wore my light Outoor Research gaiters and Darn Tough hiking socks in this combination. The shoes were quite comfortable walking in a light drizzle and wet foliage along the narrow trail. My feet stayed dry and comfortable. The speed lacing works well and is great for easy adjustment and tightening. The extra lace slack tucks up under the tongue pockets safely out of the way. The Outdoor Research light gaiters and the Darn Tough hiking socks combination worked very well with these shoes. My shoes seemed to have excellent traction for a multitude of terrain and the use of Yaktrax walkers when encountering snow will easily fit on these trail running shoes. The tread is a nice evenly spaced pattern that I can feel tread teeth and rocky terrain on my feet through the bottom soles of the shoes, but the cushioning is still was very comfortable. The shoes felt featherweight at 23.84 ounces for my size 11's. The Salomon Speedcross 4 Trail-Running Shoes - Men's size 11 North Atlantic/Black/Scarlet is the color and size that I ordered. When hiking downhill it was very easy to adjust the lacing so that my low volume narrow foot would not slide forward inside the shoes and hit my toes. The sizing I ordered was 1/2 size larger than my foot size and the width of these shoes was snug enough for my narrow feet. Please note that I also carried a 30# fully loaded backpack which I carried throughout my 8.8 mile hike! I would highly reccomend these shoes and I would buy them again! I am rating them 5 stars in my opinion.

I had plenty of friends recommend these shoes for the grip so I finally bought a pair. I went up a half size; they run small. Used them for a few runs. Awesome grip in muddy conditions but unfortunately too narrow for my fat foot. Returned. I'm giving them 4 stars because it is a great shoe; just not made for my feet.

Since we’re on the Appalachian Trail we went to a different outdoor retailer that happened to be a short shuttle ride away from the trail. On the store, a brand new Speedcross 4 on the display shelf had the beginning of this same separation failure. Not something a customer would immediately recognize as a defect unless, like me, you’ve got that defect flopping under your foot as the separation grows a couple of millimeters every mile walked.

These are some of the most comfortable shoes I've owned...right out of the box. I purchased the wide version and they fit my feet perfectly. I only gave them 4 starts because of the aggressive soles. My 10 yo son asked me why I was wearing cleats. Because very small surface area of rubber "meets the road", I can see that they are wearing out very quickly, and I don't feel there is any added benefit over a "normal" sole. I get that they're a trail running shoe, but I like to wear them around town as well, which doesn't help. But, who can afford to buy a different pair of shoes for everything they do throughout the day.

When I buy pair #2 of the same shoe before the first is worn out, then its a strong sign I love the shoe. These do have a narrow fit, but its perfect for my foot. And narrow shoes often fail on the outside edge due to my pronation, but these provide exceptional roll resistance. I use for everyday wear, jogging / treadmill, golf, and cross country. The tread is significant and is obviously for cross country, but I frequently wear everyday. The tread does not telegraph through on hard surfaces. The unique lace design took a little getting used to, but now I prefer. I'm a fan!

I figured I would review this model since the Speedcross 3 is no longer available. both models look virtually identical. I got the shoes a couple of weeks ago and used them this weekend. Out of the box and onto the trail. We did San Jacinto peak from the Idyllwild-Pine Cove trail head. About a 20 mile loop in two days and about 5,000 elevation gain. Pack weighed about 40lbs. Wore Adidas cushioned socks. Not one blister! The shoe did not slip, not one time! Very impressed with the way the shoe performed. Very comfortable, very good grip, very reliable. Foot stayed cool and dry, although we only hit a small muddy patch. Thinking about buying a second pair to use after my current pair. Lacing system a bit weird but holds very well. A bit tough to get off after a hard day of hiking though.

Horribly disappointed. I liked my Speedcross 3 shoes so well that I bought a new pair of Speedcross 4 shoes for our Appalachian Trail flip flop through hike. Only 120 miles out of Harper’s Ferry the sole bonding is failing on the right shoe near the big toe. Yes the trail is rough but no other part of either shoe is showing indication of cuts, scuffs, or tears, it’s simply coming apart.

I lived and worked in Denali National Park this past summer and picked up a pair of these at the beginning of the season because of the amount of traction they had, and boy did they not disappoint. I hiked for several miles in them nearly everyday for five months, on terrain ranging from meandering gravel trails, to steep backcountry mountains. Even on rainy days in soft terrain these shoes gripped like a dream. I wear them a little less now that I'm back in the city but they are still my go to for hiking, and I suspect they will be for a long time.

I had bought a different pair of Salomons with a less aggressive tread for where I normally train. I had a Spartan race coming up in Big Bear, and knew I needed a better grip. I bought the Speedcross 4's and put them on and went out and ran almost 12 miles. Straight out of the box. I ran back to back Beasts in Big Bear.12 miles each day and my feet felt great, and I had great traction on the steep mountain. I would highly recommend these to anyone. The only drawback is if you have wide feet. I don't, but try them on before you buy to make sure they work for you. Not sure if they make a wide size.

I like this shoe for hiking, great traction, well made, very good support. It is very light and comfortable on the foot. But is tight and I feel it is undersized. I had to go with a thin sock and remove the liner for my foot to fit this. They do not offer a wide at REI...perhaps it is not made in a wide. On a recent 300 mile hike on the PCT, including some desert sections, this shoe provided great performance and my feet were as cool as possible.

Just ordered my 4th pair... Originally got first pair to run Mt Marithon in Seward AK as this shoe is what most local racers find works best. Then just found they are the best shoe for all active activities all year round. Alaska summers are wet so climate shield is perfect, paired with gaiters and Kahtoola MICROspikes running or hiking all winter is my first choice for footwear. Only complaint is the soles do wear quickly on rocky terrain.

This is my second pair of the Speedcross...they are great shoes. The only gripe I might of had about the first pair, which were Speedcross 3's, was that they wore out a little too fast because the rubber compound used on the bottoms was too soft. I think Salomon fixed that and upgraded the tread compound. My 4's fit and feel amazing, and they look great. I travel a lot, so having these shoes mean I don't have to pack casual shoes and running shoes, I wear these with jeans or shorts or to work out...makes traveling much easier.

I've done 100 miles so far trail running and hiking in these and I have zero complaints. In general, I prefer low-profile sneakers. Trying them on in the store, I was skeptical because (when standing on a concrete floor) the thick lugs make it feel like a really high ride. Once you get onto dirt, gravel, or sand, though, they don't feel high at all. The lugs themselves provide most of the cushion for the sole, so there's really good feel for the ground. (The soles aren't squishy like a lot of other trail runners.)

Bought the Speedcross to replace a pair of Salomon Ultra 2 GTX hiking shoes that wore out after a year of heavy abuse. The Speedcross shoe is much more comfortable. The draw string lace on the older Ultra 2 GTX clamped down hard on the front of my foot. This lead to having to make sure I left slack on the front of the shoe when pulling the drawstring laces. The Speedcross draw string lace starts further back. With the Speedcross I just pull the lace tight once and it is good to go. Broke these in a couple days after purchase on Cactus to Clouds and had no issues at all. Good shoe. Note I wear a 9 on all my non-hiking shoes, but went with a 10 on the Speedcross and the 10 is a perfect fit.

I purchased shoe for my first full Tough Mudder and couldn't be happier! Comfort was amazing and shoe NEVER came off even when suctioned in the disgusting Louisiana mud. I would highly recommend for any trail running or similar

I purchased these shoes for a Spartan Super Aprox 10 miles and had no discomfort at all in my feet the rest of me was beat up but my feet were great!!!

I got these for both trail runs/hikes and for mud obstacle challenge runs. They work great with both environments. For the trail runs they keep feet well protected and I have never felt any serious impact on uneven terrain or landing on rocks.

I will be running on all terrain types including roads. So the question I have is how well will the tread hold up?

These are trail running shoes with aggressive tread for muddy and wet conditions. We do not suggest these for use on concrete or slick rocky areas as this will prematurely wear out the lugs.

Acme

Do these shoes run small or big

Based on feedback and reviews these shoes run slightly small.

Timothy

Do these come in 4E wide sizes up to 12?

The width of the wide sizes for these shoes is 2E.

jniko

Is the nylon mesh water resistant or water permeable?

The nylon mesh has a durable water repellency on it that gives it some water resistance.

Anyone try these Salomon shoes for the JMT? Looking to do it this summer (can't wait!) and trying to decide on trail runner. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The Speedcross is very rugged underfoot, but is a minimalistic trail running shoe. If you will not be carrying excessive weight for extended miles, this may work for you.

Bonski

What is the width of Salomon 4 trail running shoe?

This is a standard width shoe.

JOHN

Can you get the bottoms re sold when worn

The soles of these trail runners cannot be re-soled.

Michael

Will running on sand or sandy soil just grind the lugs off?

We expect the sole lugs to be durable in sandy soil.

Are these shoes designed for Neutral, Pronators, or Supinators? Are there different models availavle for different types of pronation?

These shoes are designed for neutral runners. There is a not a motion controlled version of this shoe.

Onemanwolfpack

Is the dark cloud grey an actual grey in person or does it truly have a purplish hue to it as some reviewers claim on other websites?

The Dark Cloud/Black/Pearl Grey shoes we have available are grey, not purple.

How would these shoes be hiking in the Amazon Rain Forest?

The uppers are only water resistant, so these shoes are probably not the best for the rain forest.
